Dwayne Johnson rocks skirt look at Met Gala 2026, says "most masculine men wear lavalavas and skirts"

Dwayne Johnson stuns in a Thom Browne skirt at the Met Gala 2026, citing Polynesian culture and redefining masculinity.

"In our culture, Polynesian culture, we rock lavalavas, we rock skirts. The most masculine men wear lavalavas and skirts - Dwayne Johnson"

New York City, May 5

Hollywood actor Dwayne Johnson walked down the 2026 Met Gala red carpet with his wife Lauren Hashian, turning heads in this custom-made ensemble.

The actor chose a black mohair tailcoat and a bow tie paired with a matching pleated skirt, custom-made by designer Thom Browne.

According to Variety, Dwayne Johnson's look was inspired by Polynesian culture, in which the "most masculine men" wear skirts. His tailcoat included over 350 meters of hand-pleated silk ribbons in a "skeletal composition", the report added.

Speaking about his ensemble, Johnson shared, "I feel great! First, Thom Browne's team sent the illustrations over and asked, 'Hey, is Deej going to be cool with this pleated skirt?' And I was like, 'Look, in our culture, Polynesian culture, we rock lavalavas, we rock skirts.' The most masculine men, not that I'm one of them, but the most masculine men wear lavalavas and skirts," as quoted by Variety.

Notably, this is not the first time Johnson has spoken up about masculinity.

At CinemaCon 2026, Johnson described how "real masculinity" for men of all ages means empowering the women in their lives.

"The hero of our story is not a princess. She's a warrior. All men of all ages, we should empower, support and champion all women. That's what real masculinity looks like," the actor said.

The Met Gala is arguably the most coveted and exclusive ticket in the world. For one spectacular night, a select group of global elite--including Hollywood royalty, influential politicians, chart-topping musicians, and cultural power players--ascends the museum steps.

Honestly, I find this a bit confusing. I get the cultural angle—Polynesian men wear lavalavas, our men wear lungis—but does that make it fashion at a global event? Also, can we please stop making every gender statement so dramatic? Just wear what you want, no need for a 10-minute speech.

I love how he's normalising skirts for men. In many Indian villages, men still wear dhotis without hesitation—it's only the "modern" urban crowd that gets insecure. The real masculinity is confidence, and The Rock has that in spades. Also, that comment about empowering women? Gold. 💛

Typical Hollywood PR move. They dress up a buff guy in a skirt, call it "breaking stereotypes," and everyone claps. Meanwhile, an average Indian man wearing a lungi in Mumbai is still seen as "rustic" or "backward." I wish this conversation went deeper—it's not just about celebrities.

OMG, he looks incredible! 😍 And the cultural homage is beautiful. As someone who grew up seeing grandfathers in dhotis and uncles in lungis, I've always wondered why the West makes such a big deal about men in flowing garments. The Rock showing this at Met Gala is legendary.

As a foreigner living in India for work, I find this conversation fascinating. Here, men wear kurtas and dhotis daily without a second thought. Dwayne Johnson is right—masculinity isn't about the clothes you wear. It's about character. And that skirt look is
