X Down Again: Users Report Second Outage in 24 Hours

Elon Musk-backed X experienced a second service disruption in 24 hours, with outage reports peaking around 8:30 am on Wednesday. Nearly 40% of users reported app issues, while 29% faced feed and timeline problems, according to Downdetector. This follows a similar outage on Tuesday evening and a global disruption in May. The platform has faced multiple outages this year, including in February and November 2023.

X down: Users report outage as app, website face login and feed glitches

New Delhi, June 17

Elon Musk-backed social media platform X experienced a service disruption on Wednesday, with outage reports peaking around 8:30 am.

According to outage tracking platform Downdetector, nearly 40 per cent of users reported issues with the app, while 29 per cent flagged problems with feeds and timelines. Another 18 per cent reported disruptions on the website.

However, in the last 24 hours, this is the second outage, with users reporting issues on Tuesday evening.

Earlier in May this year, the platform had suffered a global outage, including in India, with users unable to load new posts or log into their accounts. Thousands of users struggled to access X's webpages, while many also reported issues with the app and login page.

During that outage, 41 per cent of users said they were unable to log in, while an equal share reported problems with the X app.

In February, X also faced a global outage affecting users in India, the United States and the United Kingdom. At the time, more than 25,000 outage reports were logged, while 53 per cent of app users were unable to log in and 16 per cent of website users also reported issues.

In November last year, thousands of users of X also faced service disruption across India and globally, along with other websites that rely on Cloudflare's internet infrastructure to remain online.

Earlier this month, Facebook and Instagram users globally also faced widespread service disruptions, with thousands reporting that the Meta-owned platforms were either not loading properly or failing to refresh content. The outage was not confined to a single region, with users across multiple countries reporting similar issues simultaneously.

Users across several cities in India reported difficulties accessing Facebook and Instagram, with many stating that feeds were not loading and apps were not refreshing content.

This is getting ridiculous. First Cloudflare issues, then Meta outages, now X is down again. India's digital infrastructure is growing, but these global platforms keep failing us. At least our own platforms like Koo or Mastodon are more reliable when this happens. 🙄

The frequency of these outages is concerning. I remember when X was Twitter and it was much more stable. Now with all the changes, it's like they've forgotten basic server maintenance. For a country like India where millions use it daily, this is not acceptable.

I was wondering why my timeline suddenly froze at 8:30 AM. Thought it was my internet, but then saw the Downdetector reports. This is the second time this month! And it's not just X - Facebook and Instagram also had issues. Are these companies cutting costs on servers? 🙃

Honestly, at this point I'm considering going back to RSS feeds or something. The over-reliance on these platforms is problematic. When X goes down during a major news event, people miss important updates. The government should look at promoting more resilient digital alternatives.

I remember when Twitter had like one major outage a year. Now it's monthly, sometimes weekly. And they keep changing features nobody asked for. Maybe if they spent less on rebranding and more on server infrastructure, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Just saying. 🤷‍♂️
