Is X down? Netizens report issues accessing Elon Musk's micro-blogging platform
New Delhi, January 16
X, formerly known as Twitter, reportedly experienced a major global outage on Friday.
Thousands of users reported issues with the social media platform owned by Elon Musk.
"Twitter/X is currently down worldwide," a user wrote on X.
"Woah. I just realized how addicted I am to Twitter/X. The app was down and I still turned airplane mode on and off like 30 times trying to check it," another netizen posted on X.
As of 10:52 a.m. ET, 200,000 people reported issues with X, according to Downdetector, a downtime-monitoring service that tracks outages by collecting reports from multiple sources. Most problems reported on Downdetector (56 per cent) were related to the X app, while 33 per cent were related to the website and 10 per cent cited a server connection, Variety reported.
The issues with X began around 10:10 a.m. ET and seemed to briefly resolve around 10:35 a.m. At 10:41 a.m., the error messages resumed.
This is not the first time X has faced connectivity problems. The platform experienced a similar widespread outage in November, when tens of thousands of users encountered error messages such as "Internal server error/Error code 500" and "Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed."

Honestly, it was a nice forced break. I realized I was just mindlessly scrolling. Maybe we should have a "National No Social Media Hour" once a week! 😅 But seriously, for businesses and creators who depend on it, these outages are a real problem.
This is becoming too frequent. Since the takeover, the platform feels less stable. As an Indian user, I worry about reliability during important events like elections or festivals when information flow is critical. Musk needs to invest more in infrastructure.
The timing was awful for global coordination. My team in Bengaluru and our partners in the US were completely out of sync for a bit. It's more than an app; it's a professional tool for many. Hope they find a permanent solution.
All my friends immediately switched to WhatsApp groups and started sharing memes about X being down. The Indian internet ecosystem adapts very quickly! But it does highlight a monopoly problem. We need good Indian alternatives that can scale globally.
With respect to the engineers working there, this is disappointing for a platform of this scale. In India, our digital public infrastructure (like UPI) handles massive traffic with far fewer hiccups. Perhaps X's team could learn a thing or two about robust system design from here.
