Doors for Suryakumar Yadav still open: BCCI source
By Vipul Kashyap, New Delhi, July 13
Suryakumar Yadav can still make a comeback to the Indian side given he scores runs in domestic cricket consistently, said a source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Suryakumar, who led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, has been stripped of the T20I captaincy and dropped from the squad following a lean patch with the bat ahead of India's tour of Ireland and England. The BCCI named Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain.
However, India's fortunes have dipped under Iyer's leadership. The Men in Blue were whitewashed 2-0 by Ireland before suffering a 4-0 series defeat to England in the five-match T20I series, with the opening game ending in a no-result due to rain.
As per a BCCI source, the apex cricket body has not ruled out a comeback for Suryakumar, and he remains in contention for selection if he consistently performs in domestic cricket, despite not being in the current plans.
"Doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to come back if he scores runs in domestic cricket consistently," said a BCCI source.
Led by newly appointed captain Iyer, India suffered a 56-run defeat in the fifth T20I at Southampton, conceding the five-match series to England 4-0 after the opening game was washed out and ended in a no-result.
The tourists had previously lost the fourth T20I by nine wickets, the third by 125 runs, and the second by four wickets.
The defeat in England comes on the back of India's 2-0 T20I series loss to Ireland earlier this year, which marked the country's first-ever bilateral T20I series defeat against the Irish. England's triumph also represents their maiden bilateral T20I series victory over India in a contest featuring two or more matches.
India will now turn their attention to the ODI series against England, with experienced campaigners Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma set to return to the squad.

Honestly, I feel for Shreyas Iyer. He was thrown into captaincy without much preparation and now everyone's blaming him for the losses. But yes, dropping Suryakumar was harsh - he literally won us a World Cup! The BCCI needs to stop flip-flopping. Pick a captain, back them for at least a year, give them proper tours before judging. That Ireland series defeat was an embarrassment. 😤
This is typical Indian cricket politics. Surya was dropped because he had a bad run, but Iyer's captaincy record is far worse. 2-0 to Ireland? 4-0 to England? Yaar, even Bangladesh wouldn't lose like that! The problem isn't just the captain - our whole T20 approach is outdated. We need younger players who aren't afraid to innovate. Surya's 360-degree batting is what we need, not these outdated textbook shots. Bring back the SKY show! 💥
As someone who follows Indian cricket closely from abroad, this constant chopping and changing is terrible for team morale. You can't drop a World Cup-winning captain after one bad series. Suryakumar brings experience and a unique batting style. The BCCI needs to learn from Australia or England - back your players, give them a proper run. That said, if he scores 800+ runs in domestic cricket, he'll be back in no time. Fair play to the BCCI for keeping the door open.
I think the real issue is our domestic structure. If Surya has to prove himself in Ranji Trophy or Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, that's good for the system. But let's be real - how many seasons has he already dominated domestic cricket? The man has 3 IPL centuries and a T20 World Cup! BCCI should have just given him a rest period rather than publicly "dropping" him. It damages the player's confidence. Hope he uses this as motivation and comes back even stronger. 🚀
