Stalin Seeks Gas Order Review, Warns of Summer Power Crisis Risk

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, urging a reconsideration of provisions in the proposed Natural Gas Supply Regulation Order, 2026. He warned that a cap on gas supply to power plants, based on recent average consumption, could jeopardize electricity generation during peak summer demand. Stalin suggested linking gas allocation to the consumption from the same period in the previous year instead. Separately, the government announced a 25% increase in domestic LPG production, with priority for non-domestic LPG given to essential sectors like hospitals.

Good to see state leaders raising practical issues. But also important to note the government's update on LPG production increase. If domestic cylinder supply is secured for households, that's a relief. The price hike is still painful though. ₹913 in Delhi is high, can't imagine the cost in other metros. 😓

While the concern is genuine, we must also consider national resource allocation. Every state will have peak demands. The Centre has to balance needs across the country. A blanket rule might seem unfair, but maybe there are wider grid management reasons? Just a thought.

The shift from gas to electricity that CM mentions is key. As hotels and businesses go electric, the strain on the power grid increases. Planning for this transition is crucial to avoid summer blackouts. This is a forward-looking argument.

The LPG part is more worrying for the common man. ₹913 is no joke for a middle class family. Glad production is up, but prices need to be controlled. Priority for hospitals and schools for commercial LPG is the right step. Jai Hind.

Respectfully, while the letter is fine, I wish our state governments would also focus more on developing renewable energy sources for peak demand. Tamil Nadu has good wind potential. Reducing reliance on gas for power should be the long-term goal for all states.
