Diane Warren reacts to 17th Oscars loss, says "I'll be back" after setting record at Academy Awards

Songwriter Diane Warren reacts to her 17th Oscar nomination without a win, setting a record and vowing to return. Read her hopeful quote.

".QUOTE: I still want to win. My honorary Oscar gets really lonely. He wants a friend. - Diane Warren"

Los Angeles, March 16

Diane Warren is taking her latest Oscar loss in stride, posting on social media after the ceremony: "Well at least I'm consistent! And I set a new record tonite!! But U know me, I will be back if you'll have me!!!"

Taking to social media after the ceremony, Warren wrote, "Well at least I'm consistent! And I set a new record tonite!! But U know me, I will be back if you'll have me!!!"

Warren was nominated in the Best Original Song category for "Dear Me," a ballad performed by Kesha for the documentary 'Diane Warren: Relentless about her life,' according to Variety.

With the latest loss, Warren has now received 17 nominations at the Oscars without winning a competitive award.

Despite the record, Warren is not entirely Oscar-less. She received an honorary award at the Governors Awards 2022.

In an interview with The New York Times ahead of the ceremony, Warren said she still hopes to win a competitive Oscar.

"You know, I still haven't won the competitive one. And I'm a competitive person. It's amazing to have the honorary Oscar -- that's harder to get than the competitive. I don't take that for granted. But, yeah, I still want to win. My honorary Oscar gets really lonely. He wants a friend," she said, as per the outlet.

She added, "He hangs out with Rabbit, my cat, but he prefers to have an Oscar buddy."

Speaking about the possibility of winning, Warren said awards were not her main motivation.

"It's not validation," she said. "It would just be fun. And now I just keep beating my own record, I guess."

Before this year's ceremony, Warren had been tied with sound mixer Greg P Russell with 16 nominations without a win.

Meanwhile, the Best Original Song award this year went to "Golden" from KPop Demon Hunters, which had been widely predicted to win.

Warren already holds the record for the most nominations by a woman in the Best Original Song category. If nominated again, she could tie legendary songwriter Johnny Mercer for the second-highest number of nominations among songwriters, though the all-time record remains with Sammy Cahn with 26 nominations, according to Variety.

Setting a record for most losses is not something to celebrate, honestly. The Academy clearly doesn't value her work enough to give her the actual award. She should focus on her legacy, which is already huge, rather than chasing this trophy.

"My honorary Oscar gets really lonely. He wants a friend." 😂 What a great sense of humor! It's refreshing to see someone in such a competitive field not take themselves too seriously. More power to her!

It's interesting that the song that won is from a K-pop group. Global music is really dominating. I wonder if Indian composers like A.R. Rahman, who have won Oscars, ever faced such a long wait? Her story puts a spotlight on the sheer difficulty of winning.

The fact that she has an honorary Oscar, which she admits is "harder to get," says it all. The industry respects her immensely. The competitive award is just a formality at this point. Her body of work is her real trophy.

This reminds me of our own film awards sometimes, where legendary playback singers like Lata Mangeshkar ji didn't win Filmfare awards for years despite being the best. Awards are unpredictable. Her consistency over decades is the real win.
