Dia Mirza says 'let us not look away from reality' on World Environment Day

Mumbai, June 5

Actress and environmental activist Dia Mirza, on June 5, marked World Environment Day by sharing a powerful message on social media.

The actress urged people to take meaningful action towards protecting the planet and highlighted the stark contrast between communities struggling for basic necessities and those consuming resources beyond sustainable limits.

Sharing her thoughts on social media, Dia wrote that environmental protection should no longer be treated as an "optional extra" and also encouraged people to make conscious choices that will lead to a positive impact nature and the climate.

The actress wrote,"The contrasts are stark. While some communities struggle for clean air, water and dignified living conditions, others continue to consume far beyond the limits of what our planet can sustain.

It is time to stop treating environmental action as an optional extra. It is time to move beyond token gestures and towards meaningful change.

This #WorldEnvironmentDay, let us remember that every choice we make has an impact on nature, on the climate, and on each other.

Some things we can all do:

Refuse single-use plastics and avoid unnecessary plastic consumption.

Segregate and manage waste at source.

Waste less. Consume mindfully.

Protect forests, trees, wetlands and natural ecosystems.

Support organisations working for wildlife conservation and environmental protection.

Work with local authorities and communities to scale solutions that restore ecosystems and build resilience.

Invest in businesses and innovations that place people and planet at the heart of progress.

These are some of the things I try to do. Some of the things we can all do.

The environment is not separate from us. It is the source of every breath we take, every meal we eat, every drop of water we drink.

Let us not look away from reality.

Let us act with courage, urgency and hope.

For nature. For climate. For our future.

Dia is one of the few celebs who actually walks the talk. I remember seeing her plant trees with her son in Mumbai. That's more than any Instagram post. But her point about 'optional extra' hits home – in India, environment is always the last priority for governments and corporations. We need laws with teeth, not just awareness drives. Good message though. 👍

It's refreshing to see an Indian celebrity speak about environmental justice rather than just planting a tree for a photo op. The disconnect between rich and poor in resource consumption is real – we see it everywhere from Delhi's air to Bengaluru's water crisis. Dia's list is practical. I'll start refusing plastic straws more actively. Thanks for sharing!

Beautifully said, Dia! But let's be real – in Tier-2 cities like mine, waste segregation is a joke. The municipality dumps everything in the same truck anyway. We need infrastructure, not just individual guilt. Still, consciousness is the first step. Love that she's teaching her son about this – kids learn what they see. 🌿

I've been following Dia's work for years – she's genuinely committed. Her point about wealthy overconsumption vs poor communities struggling for basics is so important for India. We have villages with no clean water and cities with swimming pools in every apartment. We can't have climate justice without social justice. Hope more people listen.

Dia is great, but I wish she'd also call out the entertainment industry's massive carbon footprint – sets
