Depression over Bay of Bengal to trigger heavy rain in south Bengal from Tuesday

A fresh depression intensifying over the Bay of Bengal is likely to bring heavy rainfall across several districts of south Bengal from Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said on Saturday.
According to officials at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Alipore, a depression is expected to form over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh later in the day, while a cyclonic circulation over the region is also strengthening. The combined impact of these weather systems is expected to sustain rainfall activity across south Bengal in the coming days.
The Met office has advised fishermen not to venture into the deep sea over the next 24 hours as rough sea conditions are likely to prevail due to the depression. Scattered rainfall is expected to continue across the state till Tuesday.
Rainfall activity is likely to intensify in the coastal districts over the next two days, with heavy to very heavy showers forecast in parts of South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore and West Midnapore. Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Bankura and Jhargram districts.
From Tuesday onward, the intensity of rain is expected to increase further across the western and coastal districts, as well as other parts of Gangetic south Bengal.
In contrast, rainfall activity in north Bengal is likely to ease. The Met office has forecast only scattered light to moderate rain in the five northern districts over the next four days, with no major weather warning currently in place for the region.
While Kolkata witnessed relatively little rainfall on Friday, showers are likely on Saturday under the influence of the low-pressure system. Weather conditions are expected to improve on Sunday before heavy rain returns to Kolkata and adjoining areas from Tuesday.
On Friday, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, 3.4 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 26 degrees Celsius, marginally below normal. Relative humidity levels ranged between 86 and 99 per cent. The city's maximum and minimum temperatures on Saturday are expected to hover around 30 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Wish they'd focus on drainage systems instead of just issuing warnings. Every year it's the same story—heavy rain, waterlogged roads, traffic chaos. The forecast is useful but the infrastructure needs to catch up.
Fishermen being advised to stay ashore is important—safety first! Glad the Met office is being proactive. But I hope the southern districts like South 24 Parganas and Midnapore are prepared. Those areas get hit hard. Stay safe everyone! 🙏
It's interesting how the weather patterns shift so drastically between north and south Bengal. Here in the north, we're getting light showers while Kolkata is bracing for heavy rain. Nature always keeps us on our toes!
"Heavy to very heavy showers" sounds scary, but honestly, Bengal needs the rain for the fields. The farmers in East Midnapore will be relieved. Just hoping the authorities have evacuation plans ready if needed.
Look at the silver lining—the temperature dropping to 28°C is amazing for August! Usually we're sweating at 35°C by now. A bit of rain is a small price to pay for this kind of relief. 😄
