Copenhagen, June 2

Mette Frederiksen has secured a third term as Denmark's Prime Minister as a coalition deal was reached around 10 weeks after parliamentary elections.

Social Democrat Frederiksen will lead a new centre-left government consisting of four parties.

Late on Monday, Frederiksen informed King Frederik X of her intention to form a coalition made up of her Social Democrats, the Socialist People's Party, the right-wing liberal Venstre party and the centrist Moderates.

"His Majesty the King has subsequently invited acting Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to form such a government," said a statement from the Danish Royal House.

Frederiksen plans to present the new government's priorities on Tuesday. The new ministers are then scheduled to be presented to the king on Wednesday.

Third term for Frederiksen! That's no small feat. 🎉 It's refreshing to see a leader who can bring together ideologically diverse parties — Social Democrats, Socialist People's Party, Venstre (liberals), and Moderates. In Indian politics, we often see alliances that are purely for power, not policy. This seems like a genuine effort at broad consensus. Wish our leaders could learn a thing or two.

I'm curious how a right-wing liberal party like Venstre will work with socialists in government. In India, such a coalition would be unthinkable — imagine BJP and Congress in the same cabinet! But maybe that's why Danish politics is more mature. However, I'm skeptical about whether such a broad coalition can implement any bold reforms. Sometimes too much consensus leads to stagnation. 🤔

"King Frederik X" — love that the monarchy is still part of the process in Denmark! 🇩🇰 It's so different from India's republican system. But it's nice that King Frederik plays a ceremonial role in government formation. And frankly, 10 weeks for coalition talks shows they take democracy seriously. In India, we'd probably have had a trust vote within days. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I've been following Danish politics from abroad. Frederiksen has handled the pandemic, inflation, and now tough coalition negotiations. That's impressive by any standard. But I wonder if this broad coalition can address the rising concerns about immigration and integration that have been hot topics in Denmark. The Social Democrats have been tough on immigration in recent years — that shift is something Indian policymakers might want to study.
