Delhi CM orders 'old clothes collection boxes' at 10 Metro stations

In an initiative aimed at environmental conservation and sustainable development, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will install special collection boxes for old clothes at 10 major stations.
She said that at these stations, people can deposit garments they no longer wear. These clothes will be recycled and converted into useful products.
Chief Minister Gupta said the Delhi government is continuously working towards building a clean, green, and environmentally responsible capital.
Textile waste is among the rapidly growing environmental challenges, and this initiative will ensure the scientific recycling of old clothes. The effort is expected not only to reduce waste but also to strengthen sustainable development, she said.
According to the Chief Minister, the 10 Metro stations identified for the initiative are Shahdara (Red Line), Mohan Estate (Violet Line), Rohini West (Red Line), Lajpat Nagar (Violet and Pink Lines), Malviya Nagar (Yellow Line), Mayur Vihar Phase-I (Blue and Pink Lines), Hauz Khas (Yellow and Magenta Lines), Punjabi Bagh West (Pink and Green Lines), Dwarka (Blue Line) and Shalimar Bagh (Pink Line).
The Chief Minister said the objective of the initiative is to connect people with the recycling campaign and create awareness about the reuse of clothing.
The Delhi government is committed to promoting public participation in environmental campaigns, she said.
The Chief Minister further said that the Delhi government will ensure that the collected clothes are utilised in an environmentally-friendly manner and that transparency and efficiency are maintained throughout the process.
Under the initiative, the garments will be segregated into different categories and made available to reputed non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and self-help groups (SHGs) for reuse and upcycling into useful products. Various items, including bags and rugs, will be made from these clothes.
According to DMRC, the collection areas at the selected stations will be branded under the name of the Delhi Metro Ladies Welfare Organisation (DMLWO).

Nice idea but I hope they actually recycle properly and not just dump them somewhere. Also, what about quality checks? Some people might throw extremely worn-out clothes which may not be usable at all. Need proper segregation and transparency—else it's just optics.
Finally something practical! I've been looking for a way to donate old clothes without hassle. Metro stations are accessible for most Delhites. Hope the NGOs involved are genuine and the upcycled products actually reach the needy, not just sold for profit.
Ye to bahut acha step hai! Metros mein roz hazaron log aate-jaate hain, toh collection easily ho jayega. Lekin please ensure ki ye boxes regularly empty ho aur koi gandagi na ho. Basanti kurtis aur designer suits bhi daal sakte hain? 😊
Hope this isn't another cosmetic initiative. Delhi has bigger problems like pollution and traffic. But if executed well, this could set an example for other cities. Would be nice to see what percentage actually gets recycled vs donated. Transparency is key.
My mother-in-law has a trunk full of old sarees she's been holding onto for years—this is perfect! Will convince her to donate. Also, they should add stations at Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate for maximum reach. Well done, Delhi government and DMRC! 👏
