"Decision people made is right in front of you": Farooq Abdullah on poll results in five states/UT

"The decision that people have made is right in front of you. - Farooq Abdullah"

Budgam, May 5

Jammu & Kashmir National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday acknowledged public mandate in the recently concluded Assembly elections in four states and one Union Territory, hoping that the newly formed governments would do "good for the people".

Speaking to the reporters here, Abdullah said, "The decision that people have made is right in front of you. What can I do about it? New governments have come in; may Allah make them do good for the people."

"This nation belongs to all of us; take care of that and everyone progresses," he added.

Abdullah's comments come after the recently concluded Assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Keralam, Assam, and Puducherry, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won in West Bengal and Assam. In Keralam, the UDF won, and TVK won massively in Tamil Nadu, securing 108 seats.

BJP won 206 seats in West Bengal, recording a historic win in the state, outperforming its 77-seat tally in the 2021 Assembly elections.

Trinamool Congress (TMC), which swept the last Assembly polls by winning 212 seats, lost the 2026 Assembly polls.

As this happened, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the BJP's sweeping victory in West Bengal as a "historic fulfilment" of the dream of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee. For the BJP, this win transcends politics; it is the ultimate validation of their founder's mission to secure and prosper the state.

It's interesting that Farooq Abdullah is so accepting of the results. In Kashmir, we know how elections can be complicated, but his "May Allah make them do good for the people" is a nice touch. BJP's win in Bengal is massive - 206 seats from 77 in 2021 is incredible. But I worry about unity in a diverse country like ours. Nation belongs to all, as he said.

"Decision people made is right in front of you" - but was it truly free and fair? The media narrative heavily favored BJP in Bengal. TMC's loss from 212 to less than 100 is shocking. In Tamil Nadu, TVK's massive win (108 seats) is a slap to both DMK and ADMK. Democracy is about choices, and people chose change. Let's hold these governments accountable.

PM Modi said this win is for Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee's dream. That's a powerful connection to BJP's ideological roots. But what about the common person? Price rise and unemployment are real issues. Farooq's comment about "everyone progresses" is key. If development doesn't reach all sections, these wins will be hollow. Let's see real action.

What a gracious acceptance from Farooq sahab! In today's politics, humility is rare. BJP's sweep in Bengal is historic, but I'm watching Assam and Kerala too. The UDF win in Kerala ended 10 years of LDF rule. TVK's clean sweep in Tamil Nadu is a new chapter - DMK's arrogance finally punished. But can these new governments truly unite people across lines?
