CWG 2026: PM Modi hails India's boxing, para athletics medallists at Glasgow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated India's medal winners at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, applauding their exceptional performances across boxing and Men's Shot Put.
Hailing Shubham Juyal, Soman Rana, Jadumani Singh Mandengbam, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, Arundhati Choudhary, Lovlina Borgohain and Sachin Siwach, PM Modi praised their skill, determination, discipline and unwavering commitment to excellence.
He noted that their achievements reflect India's growing sporting prowess and inspire countless young athletes across the country. Extending his best wishes for their future endeavours, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that they would continue to scale greater heights and bring more glory to the nation.
Indian boxing scripted its greatest-ever performance at the Commonwealth Games as Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal clinched gold medals on Saturday, taking the country's record-breaking haul to nine medals in Glasgow, seven gold and two silver.
The historic campaign marked India's most successful boxing outing in Commonwealth Games history, underscoring the remarkable depth and growing dominance of the country's pugilists on the international stage.
The two silver medals came through Jadumani Singh in the men's 55kg category and Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain, who finished runner-up in the women's 75kg division after narrowly losing to Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree.
"Congratulations to Jadumani Singh Mandengbam on winning a Silver Medal in the Men's 55 kg Boxing event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. His success is powered by his courage, discipline and perseverance. All the best for the endeavours ahead," PM Modi wrote in an X post.
India's boxing contingent has now delivered its finest-ever Commonwealth Games performance, collecting seven gold medals through Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg).
"A prestigious Gold for Sakshi in the Women's 51 kg Boxing event! Congratulations to her on a commanding performance and a decisive victory. May she continue to scale greater heights!" PM Modi wrote in an X post.
The historic campaign underlined the remarkable depth of Indian boxing, with both experienced campaigners and emerging stars contributing to an unprecedented medal haul.
"Priya Ghangas brings home a glorious Gold in the Women's 60 kg Boxing event! It reflects her remarkable skill and mental strength. Congratulations to her. My best wishes for her upcoming endeavours," PM Modi wrote in another X post.
India's overall medal tally at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games has risen to 37 medals--13 gold, 16 silver and eight bronze--strengthening its position in fourth place on the medals table.
"Arundhati Choudhary scripts history with a brilliant Gold in the Women's 70 kg Boxing event at the Glasgow Games! She displayed technical excellence and unwavering confidence. Congratulations to her. Wishing her many more successes in the years ahead," PM Modi wrote in an X post.
With consistent performances across multiple disciplines, the Indian contingent has continued its impressive campaign, while Australia remains firmly atop the standings with 148 medals.
"Proud of Lovlina Borgohain for winning the Silver Medal in the Women's 75 kg Boxing event! She displayed great skill throughout her games. Congratulations to her. Her dedication and consistency continue to inspire athletes across the nation," PM Modi wrote in another X post.
"Sachin Siwach strikes Gold at Glasgow! Congrats to him for the success in the Men's 60 kg Boxing event. He will motivate several young boxers. All the best for his endeavours ahead. May he always make India proud," PM Modi wrote.
India also celebrated a historic day in para athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Saturday as Soman Rana clinched gold and Shubham Juyal claimed silver in the men's F57 shot put final, securing the country's first-ever gold medal and maiden double podium finish in the event.
"Immensely proud of Shubham Juyal for bringing home a Silver Medal in the Men's Shot Put F57 event at the Commonwealth Games. His powerful technique and commitment to the sport are admirable. May this feat propel him towards even greater accomplishments in his subsequent endeavours," PM Modi wrote in an X post.
In an all-Indian battle for the top spot, Soman produced a best throw of 13.40m to edge Shubham, who finished close behind with an effort of 13.28m. The result marked India's first gold medal in the men's F57 shot put at the Commonwealth Games and the nation's first-ever one-two finish in the discipline.
"History made by Soman Rana! Congratulations to him on clinching the Gold Medal in the Men's Shot Put F57 event. With this exceptional triumph, he has secured India's first-ever Commonwealth Gold in this event. His focus and unwavering determination were evident throughout the competition. Great to see PM Modi personally congratulating each athlete. This kind of recognition matters. But I hope the government also focuses on grassroots development - we need more sports academies and better facilities in smaller towns. The talent is clearly there, we just need to nurture it better.

Lovlina Borgohain narrowly missed gold but her consistency across Olympics and CWG is commendable. Australia leading with 148 medals shows we still have a long way to go in overall medal tally.
