Hyderabad, July 20

Indian cricketer and Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammed Siraj paid a courtesy call on Telangana Director General of Police C.V. Anand here on Monday.

This was Siraj's first meeting with Anand after the latter took charge as the DGP in May.

Inspector General (P&l) Gajarao Bhupal and DSP ( Sports) Ramarao were also present during the meeting at the DGP Office.

In October 2024, the India pacer officially took over as the DSP.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had announced a government job and a house site for Siraj after India won the ICC T-20 World Cup-2024.

In August 2024, the State cabinet resolved to offer Group-1 posts of DSP cadre to Siraj and champion boxer Nikhat Zareen. The state government had amended the Telangana (Regulation of appointments to public services and rationalisation of staff pattern and pay structure) Act, 1994, to facilitate the appointments.

The government also allotted 600 square yards of land to Siraj at Road Number 78, Jubilee Hills.

Meanwhile, DGP Anand reviewed the functioning of the Police Welfare Society and Arogya Bhadratha (Health Protection) wings at the DGP Office and reaffirmed that the welfare of police personnel and their families remains one of the highest priorities of the Telangana Police. The meeting extensively reviewed the implementation of welfare schemes, their progress and future course of action.

Addressing the officers, the DGP said the department has been implementing a wide range of welfare initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of police personnel and their families.

He stated that the department has been encouraging meritorious children of police personnel through Merit Scholarships and Meritorious Scholarships. Financial assistance is also being extended to students preparing for JEE, NEET and other national and state-level competitive examinations, thereby promoting higher education and academic excellence.

The DGP said the department is providing comprehensive welfare support through marriage loans, medical loans, education loans, merit scholarships, meritorious scholarships, additional corpus insurance and various grant-based assistance schemes, ensuring financial security for police personnel and their families.

Reviewing the Health Protection Scheme, the DGP noted that 33,126 police personnel and their family members availed treatment under the scheme during 2025, while 12,392 beneficiaries received treatment up to June 2026. Expenditure under the scheme stood at Rs 181.74 crore during 2025 and Rs 73.61 crore up to June 2026, reflecting the department's continued commitment to employee healthcare.

While it's nice to see celebrities getting these positions, I think the government should first focus on the regular police recruitment process. There are many qualified candidates waiting for years for Group-1 posts. But no denying Siraj's talent - he's an inspiration for millions of Hyderabadis!

The welfare schemes mentioned by DGP Anand are commendable - especially the health coverage for 33,000+ personnel. However, the expense figures seem huge for just health benefits. Would love to see more transparency on how these funds are utilized for the actual welfare of policemen and their families 🎯

Good to see the government recognizing sports talent! Siraj and Nikhat Zareen both getting DSP posts sends a strong message to youth. But I wish the amendments to the 1994 act were done more carefully - giving government jobs as rewards shouldn't become a precedent that dilutes the recruitment process.

As someone who follows Indian cricket closely, this is a unique integration of sports and civil service. Siraj's journey from a humble background to representing India and now a senior police officer - truly inspirational. The Telangana government seems to be doing well with welfare schemes for police families too.

I appreciate the DGP's focus on health and education for police kids. But let's also talk about the mental health of our police force - the stress they face daily is immense. Merely giving scholarships and loans isn't enough; we need proper counseling and work-life balance policies too. Siraj's appointment could bring fresh perspective to police reforms!
