Cricket West Indies announces squad for T20 series against Sri Lanka in Jamaica
Saint John's, June 9
Cricket West Indies has announced the 15-member squad for the three-match T20 International series against Sri Lanka, scheduled for June 11 to June 14 at Sabina Park in Jamaica.
This series marks the West Indies' first T20 assignment since the team's strong showing in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in February and March and forms an important part of long-term preparations for the 2028 edition in Australia and New Zealand.
Exciting young batting talents Ackeem Auguste and Jewel Andrew, along with all-rounder Shamar Springer, are the three changes to the squad that featured at the global event in India and Sri Lanka, where the "Men in Maroon" fell just short of reaching the semi-finals.
Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph was not considered for selection as part of workload management plans and will continue his training and preparation ahead of the two-match test series being held in Antigua.

Good to see Shai Hope leading the team again. He's been consistent with the bat and seems to have a calm head as captain. But seriously, no Alzarri Joseph? Workload management is important, but he's their main strike bowler in T20s. Hope this doesn't backfire against a strong Sri Lankan batting lineup. 🏏
West Indies cricket is in such a weird phase. They have the talent - Hetmyer, Powell, Rutherford can all be match-winners - but consistency is always the issue. The inclusion of Jewel Andrew is exciting though; I've heard good things about his power-hitting. On paper, this is a balanced squad, but execution will matter, especially in the Caribbean conditions.
As someone from the UK who loves the shorter format, I'll be watching this series. It's a shame West Indies didn't go further in the World Cup - their brand of cricket is so entertaining. This series is a chance for them to build momentum. Shameless plug: I wish the broadcast quality from Sabina Park was better... come on, it's 2023!
I'm a bit surprised to see Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford both in the squad - they are similar types of players. Would have liked to see a specialist spinner like Yannic Cariah instead of an extra all-rounder. That said, it's great that Daren Sammy is continuing as coach; he really understands the DNA of West Indies cricket. Hoping for some fireworks from Hetmyer! 🔥
