Jammu, April 7

A counter-terrorism refresher course commenced on Tuesday for J&K Police personnel at the Army's Tiger Division.

Defence Ministry spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Suneel Bartwal, said in a statement that an inauguration ceremony marking the commencement of the Counter-Insurgency/Counter-Terrorism Refresher Course for J&K Police personnel was conducted at Tiger Division.

The event was attended by Anand Jain, Indian Police Service, Additional Director General of Police, Armed J&K, and General Officer Commanding Tiger Division, along with other senior officials of the Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir Police.

The refresher course, scheduled from April 7 to April 18, 2026, was jointly conceptualised by the senior leadership of the Indian Army and J&K Police.

The initiative aims to further enhance operational synergy, coordination, and standardisation of procedures in the complex and evolving security environment of Jammu & Kashmir.

A total of 108 police personnel will be trained at the Miran Sahib Brigade. Training will cover a wide spectrum of operational aspects, enhancing skills for counter-terrorist efficacy.

Police will also be trained in new-generation equipment, drone and counter-drone measures. The course is focused on strengthening junior leadership capabilities, which play a critical role in the execution of small team operations in counter-terrorism scenarios.

Over the years, numerous joint operations by the Indian Army and J&K Police in areas such as Kathua, Dudu-Basantgarh, Doda, Kishtwar, and Rajouri have highlighted the importance of seamless coordination, shared situational awareness, and mutual trust.

This refresher course will further consolidate these strengths and enhance interoperability between security forces at the tactical level. Senior officials emphasised that such joint training initiatives are essential for building a coordinated, disciplined, and well-prepared response to emerging security challenges.

The initiative reflects the continued commitment of the Indian Army and J&K Police towards maintaining peace, stability, and security in the region.

Good initiative. But I hope the focus is also on ensuring these operations are conducted with maximum care for civilian safety and human rights. That builds lasting trust with the local population.

Training 108 personnel is a good start, but we need this on a much larger scale. Every constable on the ground in J&K should have this advanced training. Our forces are doing a tough job, they deserve the best tools and skills.

Refresher courses are essential. Tactics and technology change so fast. Glad to see the focus on "junior leadership" – the hawaldar and sub-inspector on the ground are often the first responders. Their training is paramount.
