Congress's Ghulam Ahmad Mir welcomes parliamentary panel's J-K visit as "goodwill gesture"
Anantnag, June 24
Congress General Secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir on Wednesday welcomed the visit of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs to Jammu and Kashmir, describing it as a goodwill gesture that would help promote peace and tourism in the region.
Speaking to ANI, Mir said that parliamentary committees have previously held meetings in Jammu and Kashmir and such visits are part of the normal functioning of Parliament. Mir said the visits send a positive message about the situation in the Valley and contribute to improving the region's image.
"This is a process of Parliament. There are different committees. This is not the first time; earlier too many Parliamentary Standing Committees have preferred to conduct their business in Jammu and Kashmir during this season. This is a goodwill gesture. When the Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting is held here, they go from here as our ambassadors of peace, which helps the environment of Kashmir and benefits tourism," he said.
The committee, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, is currently on a four-day study visit to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to examine Indo-Pak relations, Sino-Indian relations, and the functioning of passport offices and Passport Seva Kendras.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday met members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, currently on a four-day study visit to the Union Territory.
During the interaction, Abdullah exchanged views with committee members, including Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, on a range of issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of sustained engagement to better understand the aspirations, challenges and developmental priorities of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is currently touring Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, on Tuesday, said the delegation's visit was progressing well and that its members would draw conclusions only after completing their tour of the Union Territory.
Addressing reporters, Tharoor said the 10-member delegation has so far visited only the Suchetgarh border in Jammu and reviewed the functioning of the passport office and Passport Seva Kendra.
"We are now heading to Srinagar, where we will have discussions with the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister. After that, we go to Kargil the day after tomorrow and Leh the following day. We will decide on what to write only after observing everything," he added.

Honestly, calling this a "goodwill gesture" feels like political theater. Committees visit all states; why make J&K special? If the government really wants peace, they should focus on restoring statehood and addressing local unemployment. Tourism won't fix everything.
Shashi Tharoor is one of our sharpest MPs—glad he's leading this. The Suchetgarh border visit is crucial; understanding ground realities near the Line of Control is key for any foreign policy discussion. Hope the delegation also meets border area residents to hear their concerns. 🇮🇳
"Ambassadors of peace"—Mir sahab ka yeh point sahi hai. When MPs go back and share positive stories, it changes the narrative. But I wish the committee also discussed internet restrictions and how they affect students and businesses. Digital access is a basic need now.
Omar Abdullah meeting the committee is interesting—despite being in opposition, he's engaging constructively. That's mature politics. Let's hope this leads to better communication between Centre and state leaders. J&K needs development, not just photo ops. 👍
BJP critics will say this is just Congress trying to show relevance in J&K. But honestly, any engagement is better than none. Tharoor is well-respected internationally; let him do his job. Kargil visit is particularly important given the current tensions with China.
