Good move. Sri Lanka is strategically important. Hope this cooperation also includes maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region. China's growing presence is a concern for both countries.

While defence ties are important, I hope our engagement with Sri Lanka also focuses strongly on economic partnerships and people-to-people connections. That's the foundation for lasting peace.

The focus on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) is commendable. Given the climate challenges in the region, coordinated efforts between our militaries can save countless lives during cyclones or floods.

A respectful note of caution. The IPKF chapter was painful. While we honour our martyrs, any future military cooperation must be very clearly defined, with full respect for Sri Lankan sovereignty. Lessons must be learned from history.
