Coal India Q1 profit rises marginally to Rs 8,852 crore; declares interim dividend of Rs 5.50 per share
Mumbai, July 27
State-owned Coal India Limited on Monday reported a marginal 0.6 per cent year-on-year increase in its consolidated net profit for the first quarter of FY27, even as revenue rose strongly on higher sales.
The company also announced an interim dividend of Rs 5.50 per equity share, according to its stock exchange filing.
Coal India's consolidated net profit stood at Rs 8,852 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, compared with Rs 8,797 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year (Q1 FY26), as per its filing.
Revenue from operations rose 7.8 per cent to Rs 46,255 crore during the April-June quarter from Rs 42,919 crore a year earlier.
However, operating performance remained under pressure. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) declined 4.1 per cent year-on-year to Rs 12,069 crore from Rs 12,588 crore.
Consequently, the EBITDA margin narrowed to 26.1 per cent from 29.3 per cent in the year-ago period.
Alongside its quarterly results, the coal mining major declared an interim dividend of Rs 5.50 per equity share.
The company has fixed July 31, 2026, as the record date for determining the eligibility of shareholders, while the dividend will be paid on or before August 25, 2026.
Coal India shares ended Monday's trading session marginally higher by 0.02 per cent at Rs 427.50 apiece on the NSE, underperforming the benchmark Nifty index, which gained 0.96 per cent.
The stock opened at Rs 429.50 and traded in a range of Rs 425.75 to Rs 431 during the session.
Over the past 52 weeks, the stock has touched a low of Rs 368.65 and a high of Rs 491.25.
Despite recent volatility, Coal India shares have gained 12.26 per cent over the past year.
The company currently commands a market capitalisation of around Rs 2.43 lakh crore and trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 7.58.

Dividend of Rs 5.50 is nice for retail investors like my father who hold this stock for steady income. But I wish the government would push Coal India more towards clean coal tech and diversification. We can't keep ignoring climate goals while celebrating marginal profit growth.
As someone working in the energy sector, interesting to see Coal India hold up. Revenue up 7.8% despite margin pressure shows demand is still there, likely from power plants. But with solar becoming cheaper every quarter, this model isn't sustainable long-term.
Bought CIL at Rs 390 last year, so this is decent. PE of 7.58 is very low—one of the cheapest PSUs. But the stock barely moved today while Nifty went up almost 1%. Market is punishing it for the margin miss. Let's see if the dividend record date brings some buying.
Marginal profit increase of 0.6% with 7.8% revenue growth suggests costs are eating into profits. Inflation in mining equipment or higher wages maybe? Coal India needs to automate more to stay competitive. Dividend is good but I worry about long-term demand with India's renewable push.
My father has been holding Coal India for decades—the dividend yield is around 5-6% at current price, which is great for retirees. But I wonder if the management is doing enough to explore new revenue streams. Coal will be around for a while in India, but margins will keep falling. Hope they use this cash to invest in future.
