New Delhi, June 13

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday lauded the successful demonstration of multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence and anti-ship missile capabilities by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, saying the achievement has strengthened the foundations of a secure, self-reliant and resilient India.

Taking to social media X, CM Yogi said, "Every milestone in indigenous defence technology strengthens the foundations of a secure, self-reliant and resilient India. The successful demonstration of multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) and anti-ship missile capabilities by DRDO India reflects the growing strength of New India's scientific and strategic capabilities under the visionary leadership of Hon. PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji."

"Congratulations to our scientists, engineers and the entire Team DRDO on this remarkable achievement. The nation is proud of your unwavering commitment towards strengthening India's defence preparedness and national security," he said.

Earlier in the day, the DRDO successfully demonstrated a range of advanced strategic capabilities, including a multi-layered BMD system and a new anti-ship missile, marking a significant milestone in India's indigenous defence programme and strategic capabilities.

According to a Ministry of Defence press release, the DRDO successfully carried out tests showcasing the nation's next-generation defence technologies designed to counter evolving security threats.

The demonstrations were carried out through three consecutive flight tests conducted on June 10 and 11.

The ministry said a "Multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) capability was successfully demonstrated," with interceptor missiles accurately engaging and neutralising their designated targets during the trials.

"The interceptors successfully engaged their respective targets," the release stated, adding that the systems have been "designed and developed with the latest technologies to address the emerging missile threats."

The successful demonstration is seen as a major boost to India's strategic deterrence capabilities. The ministry noted that the tests have elevated India's standing among a select group of countries possessing sophisticated missile defence systems.

"These tests have put the country in the elite group of nations having BMD capability to engage up to Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles," the press release said.

Great technological achievement indeed, but CM Yogi's 'New India' rhetoric feels a bit tired. Let's not forget that DRDO's journey started decades before Modi came to power. Our scientists deserve credit regardless of who's in office. Still, any boost to national security is welcome.

As someone who tracks global defence tech, this is genuinely impressive. Multi-layered BMD capable of engaging ICBMs is no joke. India's indigenous defence programme has matured remarkably. Well done, DRDO! The world should take note.

My only concern: are we spending too much on these big-ticket projects while our soldiers lack basic equipment? I've read reports about bulletproof vests and winter gear shortages. Let's celebrate but also demand accountability. Security is more than just fancy missiles.

Reading this gives me chills. From having to import almost everything in the 90s to developing our own BMD system - what a journey! 😭 Proud of our scientists. Also appreciate CM Yogi's recognition - it's important for political leaders to applaud such achievements.

Impressive capability. Just hope this doesn't trigger an arms race in the region. Defence is necessary, but diplomacy should always be the priority. Still, kudos to DRDO for technical excellence.
