CinemaCon 2026: Toy Story 5 footage shows dispute between Woody, Buzz over who becomes a hero

New Toy Story 5 scenes reveal a paunchy Woody clashes with Buzz over who saves the day from a high-tech rival. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen present.

"We looked at a video of us doing the first one -- we look like our grandchildren. - Tim Allen"

Las Vegas, April 17

The makers of 'Toy Story 5' unveiled footage from the upcoming movie at CinemaCon on Thursday. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, the lead voice cast of the film, arrived on stage to present the footage, reported Variety.

According to the outlet, one of the unveiled scenes found the toys dealing with being shunted aside by their owner Bonnie (Scarlett Spears), in favour of Lilypad (Greta Lee), a tablet designed in the face of a frog that allows its owner to build chat groups and play interactive games with friends for hours and hours. That could spell the end of the line for Sporkey, Rex, Hamm, Bo Peep and the other dolls and action figures that once delighted Bonnie.

So to figure out a way to battle all that screen time, the toys send out an SOS to Woody, who arrives, in the second sequence, paunchier, balder and wearing a poncho that's straight out of a Clint Eastwood Western. But that makes Buzz feel unappreciated, and the two friends soon clash over who has been deputised to save the day, reported Variety.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, who took the stage in Las Vegas to debut the first look, acknowledged that 30 years have passed since 'Toy Story' first captivated audiences.

"We looked at a video of us doing the first one -- we look like our grandchildren," Allen quipped, while Hanks said he looked like he was in "junior high school" when he saw the behind-the-scenes look, as quoted by Variety.

Along with Hanks and Allen, the cast includes Joan Cusack, Greta Lee, Tony Hale and Conan O'Brien. Andrew Stanton, who oversaw "WALL-E" and "Finding Nemo," has directed the film.

Earlier this year, the trailer of the movie was released by the makers. It sets up the central conflict as Bonnie's attention shifts to a high-tech, frog-themed tablet named Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee.

Rather than presenting technology as a simple villain, the film appears to frame the story as an existential reckoning for toys facing obsolescence.

New characters expand the ensemble. Atlas, a cheerful GPS hippo voiced by Craig Robinson, Snappy, an excitable camera toy voiced by Shelby Rabara, and Smarty Pants, a toilet-training tech toy voiced by Conan O'Brien, make their debut.

'Toy Story 5' is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 19.

Another sequel? Feels like they're just milking the franchise now. The original Toy Story was perfect. I wish they would create new stories with Indian characters and settings instead of always going back to the same well.

Woody with a poncho like Clint Eastwood? That's hilarious! 😂 The conflict sounds very real for long-time friends. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen still voicing them after 30 years is amazing. This will be a big hit with families during the summer holidays.

The theme of toys facing obsolescence is quite deep. It's not just about kids and screens, it's about anything feeling replaced by something newer and shinier. Looking forward to watching this with my kids who love the older movies.

Hope the story does justice to the legacy. The new characters like the GPS hippo sound fun. Release is in June, perfect timing after school exams get over. My daughter will drag me to the theatre for sure!
