Aizawl, May 26

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying held the 'Regional Review Meeting: North Eastern Region 2026' in Aizawl, Mizoram, where the government launched key fisheries and dairy initiatives aimed at strengthening rural livelihoods and boosting production in the region.

The meeting was chaired by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Panchayati Raj Rajiv Ranjan Singh, in the presence of Minister of State George Kurian.

During the event, the Union Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation of projects worth around Rs 32.15 crore under PMMSY and FIDF, aimed at strengthening the fisheries sector in the North Eastern Region. Fisheries KCC cards and awards were also distributed to beneficiaries, including fisheries startups and cooperatives.

The Baseline Village Level Survey for expanding Multipurpose Dairy Cooperative Societies (MDCS) was also launched to strengthen dairy cooperatives and enhance rural livelihood opportunities across the North East.

Alongside this, the booklet titled "Good Husbandry Practices in Pig Farming" and an African Swine Fever (ASF) Awareness Film were launched to promote scientific pig farming, disease prevention, improved productivity, and awareness against ASF.

Calling for coordinated efforts, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh said, "We must work in a coordinated manner to unlock the fisheries potential of the Northeastern Region." He highlighted ornamental fisheries as an emerging export opportunity.

He further stressed value chain development and modernisation, stating the need to strengthen fisheries through aquaparks, cluster development and modern technologies such as biofloc systems.

The Minister also directed the timely implementation of projects and better planning frameworks for execution on the ground.

Later, during his visit to MULCO Dairy, the Union Minister inaugurated the Mizo Cafe and FPO office-cum-sale outlet and launched MULCO Cow Ghee.

He also emphasised technology-driven reforms in dairy development, saying, "We are moving towards campaign-mode AI services and use of sex-sorted semen to enhance high-yield cattle population."

He added that dairy cooperatives will be created in mission mode with defined timelines, reaffirming the government's commitment to making the North Eastern Region self-sufficient in the dairy and fisheries sectors.

Finally some attention to the Northeast! But I wish they'd focus more on local fish varieties instead of just commercial species. Our indigenous fish are getting lost and that affects small farmers. Also, biofloc is costly for small farmers - hope subsidies reach the ground level.

Interesting to see India investing in cold chain infrastructure in the border states. This could really help with export potential if they connect it properly. Hope the plan includes training for local youth in modern fish processing techniques.

Rs 32 crore is a good start for the NE region but compared to what other states get, it's quite small. The mention of ornamental fisheries for export is smart - Mizoram's biodiversity could be a USP. Also good to see ASF awareness included, pig farming is huge there.

Glad to see progress on dairy cooperatives too. MULCO seems to be doing well. The sex-sorted semen technology is game-changing for small dairy farmers. But we need to ensure vets and AI technicians are properly trained for this tech to work in remote areas.

Very happy to see focus on the Northeast! As someone from Mizoram, I know how hard it is to transport fish without proper cold storage. The Mizo Cafe and FPO outlet at MULCO Dairy is a great step for local entrepreneurship. Let's hope the benefits reach rural families. 🙏
