CBSE to revamp payment gateway system after students face technical glitches
New Delhi, May 24
In response to widespread technical and payment-related issues faced by students during the CBSE post-result and re-evaluation process, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday held discussions with Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to address the concerns and improve the system.
Following the meeting, it was decided that four major public sector banks -- State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank and Indian Bank -- will extend support to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in strengthening its payment gateway infrastructure and integrating it more effectively with the board's post-examination services portal.
The collaboration aims to establish a more robust payment mechanism capable of handling large volumes of transactions without disruptions. The banks will assist CBSE in implementing stronger payment protocols, ensuring timely processing of payments, resolving transaction failures and facilitating automatic refunds in cases where excess payments have been made by students.
"The banks will enable CBSE to put in place robust payment protocols to ensure timely payments, address payment glitches, automatic refunds for excess payments if any," the Ministry of Education said.
Pradhan also directed CBSE to undertake a comprehensive overhaul of its payment gateway system to prevent recurrence of the issues that surfaced during the post-result services period. The move comes after several students reported difficulties while making payments for re-evaluation, verification of marks and other post-examination services.
According to the Education Ministry, the coordinated effort involving the Ministry of Finance and the participating public sector banks is expected to significantly enhance payment gateway stability, enable seamless digital transactions and provide a smoother experience for students accessing CBSE's post-examination services.
Officials expressed confidence that the upgraded infrastructure will improve reliability, reduce payment-related grievances and ensure that students can avail re-evaluation and related services without facing technical hurdles.

Good move by the government but I'm skeptical. Students in Tier-2 cities like mine still face issues with bank gateways even for normal transactions. Why not use UPI-based solutions which work seamlessly? At least for small amounts, UPI never fails.
As someone who works in fintech, I can tell you the problem isn't just payment gateways. The entire CBSE portal needs a UX overhaul too. Students trying to re-evaluate papers are already stressed - they shouldn't have to fight with a clunky interface. Let professionals handle this, not bureaucrats.
It's good to see swift action from the Education Minister. In Australia, our examination boards took years to digitize. At least India is trying to fix things quickly. Hope the refund mechanism works smoothly - students shouldn't chase their own money.
Honestly, the real issue is that students had to pay Rs 500 per subject for re-evaluation in the first place! Why should CBSE make profit from students wanting fair assessment? Fix the evaluation system first, not just payment glitches 😤
Working in a US-based tech company, I've seen how payment integrations fail when scaling. Four PSU banks collaborating should help but I hope they do proper load testing before next result season. Students in rural areas with slow internet need special attention too.
