"The bombings on Venezuelan territory and the capture of its president cross an unacceptable line. - President Lula da Silva"

Brasilia, January 3

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Saturday condemned the US strikes on Venezuela and the capture of President Maduro. He called the attack a violation of international law and said that the action recalls the worst moments of interference in the politics of Latin America and the Caribbean, threatening the preservation of the region as a zone of peace.

In a post on X he said, "The bombings on Venezuelan territory and the capture of its president cross an unacceptable line. These acts represent a most serious affront to Venezuela's sovereignty and yet another extremely dangerous precedent for the entire international community. Attacking countries, in flagrant violation of international law, is the first step toward a world of violence, chaos, and instability, where the law of the strongest prevails over multilateralism."

He added, "The condemnation of the use of force is consistent with the position that Brazil has always adopted in recent situations in other countries and regions. The action recalls the worst moments of interference in the politics of Latin America and the Caribbean and threatens the preservation of the region as a zone of peace. The international community, through the United Nations, needs to respond vigorously to this episode. Brazil condemns these actions and remains available to promote the path of dialogue and cooperation."

The United States carried out strikes on Venezuela and captured President Nicolas Maduro, along with his wife, Cilia Flores, who were flown out of the country.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that the operation was done in conjunction with US Law Enforcement.US Attorney General Pamela Bondi on Saturday announced that captured Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro has been charged with Narco-Terrorism and would face US justice.

"Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been indicted in the Southern District of New York. Nicolas Maduro has been charged with Narco-Terrorism Conspiracy, Cocaine Importation Conspiracy, Possession of Machineguns and Destructive Devices, and Conspiracy to Possess Machineguns and Destructive Devices against the United States. They will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts," she said in a post on X.

"On behalf of the entire U.S. DOJ, I would like to thank President Trump for having the courage to demand accountability on behalf of the American People, and a huge thank you to our brave military who conducted the incredible and highly successful mission to capture these two alleged international Narco- traffickers," she added.

The "capture of Maduro" comes amid an increase in tensions between the United States and Venezuela.

While Maduro's alleged crimes are serious, capturing a sitting president from another country sets a terrifying precedent. What stops this from happening elsewhere? The UN seems powerless. India should lead the call for dialogue and respect for international law.

Very complex situation. On one hand, no leader should be above the law if involved in narco-terrorism. On the other, unilateral military action undermines the global order. Brazil's balanced position—condemning force but promoting dialogue—is the mature approach. Hope cooler heads prevail.

This feels like a movie plot! But it's real and dangerous. The US acting as world police is problematic. Remember our own history with foreign interference. We must stand with principles, not powers. Brazil's statement is bold and correct. Jai Hind.

With respect, I have to disagree with the outright condemnation. If the charges are true, Maduro harmed countless lives. Sometimes decisive action is needed against rogue regimes. The method is questionable, but the goal of holding a dictator accountable isn't entirely wrong.

The hypocrisy is staggering. Which country has the right to kidnap a leader? This will only create more instability. Latin America deserves peace. India should support Brazil's stance in international forums. Sovereignty is sacred.
