Toronto US Consulate Shooting: PM Carney Condemns "Reprehensible" Attack

In a statement on X, Carney expressed relief that no one was injured in the early morning attack and assured that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and other federal agencies would provide full support to the Toronto Police Service in their investigation.

"The shots fired toward the United States Consulate in Toronto early this morning are a reprehensible act of violence and attempt at intimidation. I am relieved that no one was injured," Carney stated in his post.

"The RCMP and federal agencies will devote all needed resources to support the Toronto Police Service in their investigation, and to ensure that the perpetrators of these violent acts are identified and brought to the full weight of justice," he added.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the government's Incident Response Group had recently reviewed potential changes to the threat landscape in Canada and emphasised the need for continued vigilance to enhance domestic security.

He further added, "Canada's new government has taken bold action to strengthen law enforcement and the Criminal Code. We will use every tool available to ensure the safety and security of our communities."

According to the Toronto Police Service, the shooting incident was reported at the United States Consulate General in Toronto early Tuesday morning, prompting an investigation by authorities.

The police stated that no injuries were reported, though damage to the building was found. According to a statement issued by the Toronto Police, officers responded to a call at around 5:29 am (local time) in the area of University Avenue and Queen Street West in Toronto following reports of gunfire at the consulate building.

According to investigators, a white car travelling westbound on Dundas Street West turned southbound onto University Avenue and stopped in front of the consulate.

Two male suspects exited the vehicle and fired multiple rounds at the building before getting back into the vehicle and fleeing southbound on University Avenue.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found evidence consistent with a firearm discharge, including damage to the building's glass and door, along with shell casings.

Police said several people were inside the building at the time of the incident, but no injuries have been reported.

Investigators have released an image of the suspect vehicle and are working to identify witnesses, review surveillance footage from the area, and collect additional evidence to determine those responsible.
