Ottawa, June 4

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand expressed grief after the Malviya Nagar fire tragedy, which resulted in the death of 21 people, including several foreign nationals.

In a post on X, Anand expressed her condolences and said that she has been in touch with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to convey Canada's solidarity.

"Deeply saddened by the tragic fire that claimed at least 21 lives and injured many others in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi. Canada stands with India during this devastating time, and I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected. I have been in touch with my counterpart, @DrSJaishankar, to convey Canada's solidarity", Anand said.

The fire tragedy claimed multiple lives, with casualties reported among people present on the third floor and in the basement of the building. According to sources, a majority of the deaths were caused by suffocation.

As the investigation intensifies, Delhi Police has formed a total of 10 teams, including five dedicated to tracing and apprehending absconding hotel manager Jai Mishra, while the remaining teams are handling various aspects of the probe.

Out of the 12 foreign nationals who died in the Malviya Nagar fire incident, the Delhi Police has identified nine of them.

The Delhi Police has sent the list of all these foreign nationals to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to facilitate the repatriation of their bodies back to their respective countries.

The identification of the foreign nationals was conducted on the basis of passports recovered from the spot.

The police have completed the DNA profiling of all the foreign nationals.

The DNA profiling was carried out after obtaining permission from the embassies of the respective countries.

The post-mortem examination of the bodies of all the foreign nationals was also conducted after receiving permission from their embassies.

Nice to see Anita Anand ji expressing condolences. But let's not forget the 21 families who lost their loved ones in a completely preventable tragedy. The hotel manager absconding shows the utter negligence. Hope Delhi Police catches him soon and sets an example. 🙏

Canada's support is welcome, but I wonder why it took a tragedy for these diplomatic niceties. The real issue is infrastructure and enforcement in India. We have building codes but they are rarely followed. Foreign nationals dying in such incidents is a diplomatic embarrassment.

Kuch toh log kahenge, logo ka kaam hai kehna... But seriously, 21 lives lost in a single fire is a wake-up call. Poor ventilation, lack of fire exits, insufficient sprinklers—all basic requirements. The government must hold the owners accountable. Delhi Police ki teams ko hard work karna padega. 🔥

As a Canadian, I'm glad our FM expressed solidarity. But the 12 foreign nationals among the dead is a sobering reminder that this is a global issue. Safety standards need to be universal. My condolences to all families affected, regardless of nationality. 🇨🇦🇮🇳

It's good that Canada reached out, but let's focus on the victims. Many of those who died were likely young professionals or students. The DNA profiling and embassy coordination is a step forward for repatriation. But who will compensate the families? Insurance for such incidents is a joke in India. 😢
