BSE Replaces Wipro in Nifty 50: September 2026 Index Rejig Details

The Nifty 50 index will see BSE Ltd replace Wipro Ltd from September 30, 2026, following NSE Indices' semi-annual review. BSE's average free-float market capitalisation of Rs 1.4 lakh crore over six months far exceeded Wipro's Rs 55,930 crore. TVS Motor and Divi's Laboratories were next eligible but missed the threshold against other constituents. Wipro will move to Nifty Next 50, alongside additions like Hitachi Energy India and Vodafone Idea, while several stocks exit broader indices.

BSE to enter Nifty 50, Wipro to exit in NSE's September index rejig

Mumbai, August 10

BSE Ltd will enter the benchmark Nifty 50 index, replacing information technology major Wipro Ltd as part of the latest semi-annual review of indices by NSE Indices Ltd.

The changes will become effective from September 30, 2026, following the close of trading on September 29, NSE Indices said in a press release on Monday. The reshuffle was decided by the Index Maintenance Sub-Committee (Equity) as part of its periodic review.

According to NSE Indices, BSE had an average free-float market capitalisation of Rs 1,40,879 crore over the six-month review period, compared with Rs 55,930 crore for Wipro.

BSE qualified for inclusion as its six-month average free-float market capitalisation within the eligible universe was at least 1.5 times that of the smallest Nifty 50 constituent, Wipro.

NSE Indices said TVS Motor Company and Divi's Laboratories were the next two eligible companies, with average free-float market capitalisation of Rs 84,566 crore and Rs 82,930 crore, respectively. However, they were not considered for inclusion as they did not meet the required threshold against the remaining smallest Nifty 50 constituents.

The BSE-Wipro replacement will also apply to the Nifty50 Equal Weight index.

Following its exit from the Nifty 50, Wipro will become part of the Nifty Next 50. Hitachi Energy India, Polycab India, Vedanta Aluminium Metal and Vodafone Idea will also enter the Nifty Next 50. Indian Hotels, Lodha Developers, REC, Shree Cement and United Spirits will exit that index.

The broader Nifty 100 will also see BSE, Hitachi Energy India, Polycab India, Vedanta Aluminium Metal and Vodafone Idea being included. Indian Hotels, Lodha Developers, REC, Shree Cement and United Spirits will be removed from the index.

NSE Indices also announced changes across several other broad market, sectoral and thematic indices as part of the periodic review.

As someone who holds both stocks in my portfolio, this is interesting. Wipro has been underperforming for a while now and their IT sector growth has slowed. BSE on the other hand has benefited from the retail investor boom post-COVID. Makes complete sense! But a bit sad for Wipro's long-term investors.

This is a classic case of changing times. Indian IT companies had their golden era, but now the focus is shifting to financial infrastructure and digital exchanges. BSE's market cap being 2.5x of Wipro says it all. Also good to see Vodafone Idea entering Nifty Next 50 - at least someone sees potential there!

It's disappointing that TVS Motor and Divi's Labs didn't make it. Both are quality companies. The 1.5x threshold rule seems a bit rigid but rules are rules I guess. Anyway, happy for BSE shareholders - this was long pending. Now my Nifty index fund will have BSE exposure! 😄

Wipro investors be worried now. Once you're out of the main index, FIIs and index funds will automatically start selling. Could see further downside in Wipro. But honestly, their fundamentals haven't been great - too much focus on legacy IT, not enough on AI and new tech. Time for a strategic rethink.

Interesting to see the shift in India's market dynamics from a global perspective. BSE's rise reflects India's growing capital markets and digitalization of trading. Wipro's decline seems more about sector rotation than company failure specifically. Also noteworthy that Vodafone Idea is being added to broader indices despite its debt
