Bihar: Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep join police after international cricket

Two of India's promising international cricketers, Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep, have officially joined the Bihar Police after being provisionally appointed as Deputy Superintendents of Police.
The appointments were made following a notification issued by the Bihar Home Department under the Bihar Direct Recruitment of Outstanding Sportspersons (Amendment) Rules, 2026. They were based on recommendations from a high‑level selection committee constituted under the provisions of the policy.
The state government's decision is aimed at recognising outstanding sporting talent and encouraging accomplished athletes by providing them opportunities to enter public service through direct recruitment.
Both cricketers reported for duty at Bihar Police Headquarters in Patna on August 10, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their careers. After representing India on the international cricket stage, Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep will now take on responsibilities as police officers in the state.
A special welcome ceremony was organised at the police headquarters to formally induct the two newly appointed DSPs into the Bihar Police. Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar honoured both officers and welcomed them to the force.
Several senior police and administrative officials, including Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Manoj Kumar, were present at the ceremony. Officials congratulated the two cricketers and wished them success as they transitioned from the cricket field to public service.
The appointments mark a significant new phase in the careers of Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep, who have earned recognition through their performances as fast bowlers and will now serve the people of Bihar in uniform.
Mukesh Kumar made his international cricket debut for India in July 2023, when he represented the country in a Test match. He soon established himself as an international cricketer and went on to represent India in all three formats of the game: Test, One Day International (ODI) and T20 International (T20I).
Akash Deep made his international cricket debut for India in a Test match against England on 23 February 2024 at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. Since then, he has continued to represent India at the international level and has emerged as a promising fast bowler.

Only if sportspersons got such opportunities in every state, our sports culture would flourish more. However, I wonder if they will continue playing international cricket while being police officers. Will there be a conflict?
