Bengal CM's message on zero-tolerance for corruption; cites suspension of two officials

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday gave a message of a 'zero-tolerance approach against corruption' by suspending two motor-vehicle inspectors accused of taking bribes from a truck driver.
The Chief Minister himself issued a social media statement announcing the suspension of the two MVIs posted at Rampur check post in West Burdwan district, who were accused of allegedly demanding a bribe from a truck driver despite having valid documents and harassing him by stopping his vehicle.
The state's Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) had also started an investigation against them.
"No One is Above the Law The Government of West Bengal maintains an absolute "Zero Tolerance Policy" against corruption at any level of Administration, Department or Government. Extortion and Corruption will never be tolerated under any circumstances and we are firmly committed to weeding out corrupt elements to completely cleanse our Administrative system," CM Adhikari stated in his social media statement.
While sharing the details of the incident on his X handle, the CM wrote, ... "Incident & Complaint Details: Goods Carrier Truck No. JH09BA3535 (Owner: Dipak Singh, Driver: Shiva Yadav), while returning to the garage after servicing, the truck was wrongfully intercepted by Officials at the Rampur Checkpost in Paschim Bardhaman. The driver was illegally harassed and pressured for bribes and upon refusal, the vehicle was seized and an unlawful demand of ₹22,000 was raised towards a tax already abolished by the State Government."
The two MVIs who have been suspended and against whom the ACB had initiated a probe have been identified as Nazimul Haque and Anupam Banerjee.
"The complaints have been formally referred to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for a thorough criminal inquiry and necessary legal action. Directives are being implemented to ensure that wrongfully detained vehicles are released and that harassment of Transporters is dealt with an iron fist," the Chief Minister added.
In his social media statement, the Chief Minister has issued a strong note of caution that similar instances of proven involvement in corruption will be dealt with equal severity.
"A Stern Warning: Let this serve as a clear message to all corners of the Administration. Any Official found indulging in corruption, harassment or illegal gratification will face the strictest possible disciplinary and legal consequences. We are dedicated to ensuring a transparent, fair and corruption-free Administration," his social media statement read.

Good move by the CM, but let's be honest - how many such cases actually lead to conviction? Our system is great at making announcements but poor at follow-through. Suspension is just step one. This is good but I'm skeptical. We've seen many such "zero tolerance" campaigns in the past - from toll plazas to traffic police. The problem is systemic. You can't just suspend two officials and declare victory. Need to address why honest officers are forced into corruption by low salaries, lack of oversight, and political pressure. Root cause treatment needed, not just surface ointment.
So the CM uses social media to announce suspensions? That's theatrical. Why not make the ACB report public? Transparency would build more trust than Twitter theatrics. Also, these two officials are just the tip of the iceberg. What about the hundreds of other MVIs doing the same thing? One case doesn't change the system.
