Shreyas Iyer Likely to Replace Suryakumar Yadav as India T20I Captain

The BCCI Apex Committee is expected to meet on Thursday to announce a new T20I captain for India. Shreyas Iyer is likely to replace Suryakumar Yadav, who may also lose his place in the squad despite leading India to the T20 World Cup 2026 title. Iyer's strong IPL 2026 season with 498 runs for Punjab Kings has made him the frontrunner. Other contenders include Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, and Orange Cap winner Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

BCCI Apex Committee meeting tomorrow, Shreyas Iyer likely to replace Suryakumar Yadav as T20I skipper

Mumbai, June 3

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is expected to hold a meeting of the Apex Committee on Thursday for the announcement of a new T20 International skipper for the senior men's team, according to sources.

As per a BCCI source, Suryakumar Yadav is expected to lose his captaincy duties and his Mumbai teammate Shreyas Iyer is expected to take over as the new Team India skipper in the shortest format.

'SKY' may also lose his leadership role and possibly a place in the squad despite leading the team to the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. India retained their title successfully and became the first team to defend the T20 World Cup trophy. Men in Blue also became the first team to win the T20 World Cup trophy in front of the home crowd.

Yadav only made 270 runs in the IPL 2026 season while playing for the Mumbai Indians, which led to MI's ninth-place finish in the points table.

India is set to play two T20Is against Ireland and five T20Is against England during their European trip starting June 26.

Shreyas Iyer, who last played an international T20I match against Australia at Bengaluru in December 2023, will make his comeback to the national team on the back of a sensational run for Punjab Kings in the recently concluded IPL 2026, where he made 498 runs.

According to the source, the others in the race for the spot at the helm are destructive opener batter Ishan Kishan and middle-order batter Tilak Varma.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who ended his IPL 2026 campaign with the Orange Cap after making 776 runs, is also a serious contender for a place in the squad.

T20 cricket is ruthless. SKY led India to a World Cup win, but a poor IPL followed by a change? That's typical Indian cricket. Iyer has the runs and the leadership experience from his IPL stints. Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma are exciting options too. Good problem to have for Indian cricket.

I'm a big fan of Shreyas Iyer. He's been consistent for India and his captaincy for Punjab Kings was top-notch this year. But removing SKY after winning the World Cup feels harsh. Maybe give him one more series to get back his form? The selectors are too trigger-happy. 😒

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with 776 runs and the Orange Cap! That's the real story here. Hope he gets a place in the squad. The kid is special. As for captaincy, I'd rather see a young leader like Tilak Varma get groomed for the future. Iyer is a safe choice, but not the most exciting.

If results matter, SKY won a home World Cup. That's huge. Dropping him now because of one IPL season shows how little faith BCCI has in its players. Shreyas Iyer is a good player but let's not forget he hasn't played international T20 since 2023. Ishan Kishan would be my pick for the long run.

Indian cricket never ceases to amaze. Defend a World Cup and still get axed? That's hard. But I get it – T20 is about form and
