Baramati bypoll: Tearful Sunetra Pawar says she has 'locked her grief away' to fulfil Ajit Pawar's dreams

Emotional Sunetra Pawar breaks down at Baramati rally, vows to serve people and complete her late husband Ajit Pawar's unfinished work.

"I have locked my grief in a cellar to serve the people of Baramati. - Sunetra Pawar"

Baramati, April 21

In an emotional finale to the campaign for the Baramati Assembly by-election, MahaYuti candidate and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar on Tuesday broke down while addressing a large gathering, vowing to fulfil the dreams of her late husband, Ajit Pawar, and serve the people of Baramati.

Addressing a massive crowd, she asserted that she has taken up this "Gordian knot" (Shiv Dhanushya) to fulfill Ajit Pawar's vision for Baramati. She added that she has "locked her grief in a cellar" to serve the people of Baramati.

Sunetra Pawar characterised the political support she has received as a collective backing for the development of Baramati.

Expressing her gratitude to all organisations that extended their support, she acknowledged the contributions of the family elders and her husband.

She positioned herself as a "servant of the people" rather than a politician. "The foundation was laid by the foresight of Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar built the pinnacle upon it," she stated.

"This ground has a tradition of struggle and unity; it is the same venue where Ajit Pawar was once accorded a civic reception. This sea of people is a testament to the respect and love Baramati holds for him."

Admitting that her heart refuses to accept holding a rally without Ajit Pawar, she clarified her role in the election.

"I am standing here not just as a candidate, but to preserve the lifelong bond we share with Baramati. Baramati is my strength, and you are all my family," she said.

She further emphasised that Baramati was her husband's "breath" and that every voter was a "Pandurang" (deity) to him.

Addressing her personal loss, she remarked, "My grief is immense; I have lost everything. But looking at these orphaned followers, I am trying to move forward. No one can ever replace Ajit Pawar, but I will strive to carry forward the legacy of his thoughts."

Invoking the courage of historical women leaders, she said, "I am the companion of a warrior who never gave up. Just as Yesubai and Ahilyabai fought, I will serve you. I will work to advance the ideals of Shivaji-Shahu-Phule and treat every Baramatikar as a member of my own family."

She vowed to complete the unfinished dreams of Ajit Pawar. "I have stepped out with courage only because of the support and love of the Baramati people. You have consistently broken records of victory for Dada for 35 years; today, I stand here to carry that legacy forward," she said.

She addressed the youth specifically, echoing earlier sentiments that 65 per cent of the population is under 35 and must be organised for the state's progress.

Sunetra Pawar also addressed the lingering suspicions surrounding the aircraft accident that claimed Ajit Pawar's life. "Many people have doubts regarding the accident, and so do I," she revealed.

"I have met with the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister regarding this. Devendra Fadnavis has also given assurances in the Assembly. I maintain a firm stand that the guilty must face the harshest punishment, and both the State and Central governments are cooperating in this investigation."

Concluding her speech, she reminded the supporters of a key lesson from her husband: "Ajit Pawar always taught us that no election is small; every battle must be taken seriously."

Baramati has always been a Pawar stronghold. Sunetra tai is carrying forward a legacy, but the real test will be delivering on the ground. Hope the development work continues without any political hiccups.

The part about the aircraft accident is concerning. If even the family has doubts, there must be a thorough, transparent investigation. Justice is paramount.

Respectfully, while the sentiment is understandable, elections should be fought on issues and future plans, not just on sympathy or legacy. Baramatikars need to think about what's best for their constituency's future development.

"Every voter was a Pandurang to him." That's a beautiful way to put it, showing deep respect for the public. Ajit Pawar saheb did a lot for the region. Hope his vision is fulfilled.

Focusing on the youth and organizing the 65% under 35 is the right call. Maharashtra's progress depends on empowering the next generation with jobs and opportunities. That should be the central agenda.
