Bangladesh to Connect Nuclear Power to Grid This Year Amid Crisis

Bangladesh will begin connecting its first nuclear power to the national grid this year, starting with the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. The regulatory authority has issued a commissioning licence, with fuel loading for Unit-1 set to begin in late April. Electricity generation is expected to be added to the grid within about three months of fuel loading, aiming for full-capacity transmission by December. The government states this landmark development is vital for ensuring the country's energy security and promoting sustainable power generation.

Bangladesh to connect nuclear power to national grid this year amid energy crisis

Bangladesh's Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to begin supplying electricity to the national grid this year, a key step for energy security.

"This progress... is expected to play a vital role in ensuring the country's energy security - Bangladesh Government"

Dhaka, April 17

Bangladesh has announced that it will begin connecting nuclear power to the national grid within this year, marking a major step in its energy sector as the country faces an ongoing energy crisis driven by the West Asia situation.

According to officials, at least one unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Ishwardi Upazila is expected to start supplying electricity to the national grid this year with national support, as the government moves to strengthen energy security and ensure a stable power supply.

The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) has issued a commissioning licence to begin fuel loading activities for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.

The approval was granted following assessments and observations by both national and international regulatory bodies.

On Thursday, BAERA Chairman Mahmudul Hasan formally handed over the commissioning licence for Unit-1 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, along with relevant personnel authorisation, to M Moinul Islam, Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is being described as a landmark development in Bangladesh's power sector. With the commencement of fuel loading in its first unit, the country is set to achieve a significant step forward in its nuclear energy programme.

The official inauguration of fuel loading activities for Unit-1 is expected to take place in the last week of April.

According to the plan, electricity generation from the first unit is expected to be added to the national grid within approximately three months of the start of fuel loading. After phased testing and capacity enhancement, full-capacity power transmission is targeted by December.

"This progress of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is expected to play a vital role in ensuring the country's energy security and promoting sustainable electricity generation," the Bangladesh government said in a statement on Friday.

Senior officials of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Construction Project and Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL) were present on the occasion.

Good to see our neighbouring country taking a big leap. Energy independence is crucial. Hope they have strong safety protocols in place, especially being a first-time nuclear operator. Safety first, always.

Interesting development. With the West Asia situation affecting fuel imports, nuclear power makes sense for long-term stability. Maybe India can collaborate more on nuclear tech and safety training with them. It benefits the whole subcontinent's energy grid.

While the intent for clean energy is commendable, I have concerns. Nuclear power comes with immense responsibility—waste disposal and potential risks. I hope the international regulatory assessments were thorough and not rushed due to the crisis.

As someone from a state with nuclear plants, I can say this is a game-changer if managed well. It will reduce their reliance on imported fossil fuels. More power to them! (Pun intended 😄). Hope the December target is met.

This is big news for South Asia's energy landscape. Stable electricity in Bangladesh is good for regional trade and economic growth. Hopefully, this leads to more cross-border energy partnerships in the future. A step towards a greener future.
