Assam to open world-class sports complex soon to boost grassroots talent: CM Sarma

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announces a new sports complex in Lakhimpur to nurture grassroots talent with modern, district-level infrastructure.

"We are creating world-class sports infrastructure in each district to support our budding sports stars at the grassroots. - Himanta Biswa Sarma"

Guwahati, Jan 22

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that the Assam government is committed to creating world-class sports infrastructure across all districts, as part of its long-term vision to nurture sporting talent at the grassroots level and highlighted an upcoming project.

Sharing an update on social media platform X, the Chief Minister gave details of an upcoming modern sports complex in Lakhimpur district, located nearly 7.5 hours from the state capital Guwahati, stating that the facility would soon be inaugurated.

"Look at this upcoming sports complex in Lakhimpur. We are creating world-class sports infrastructure in each district to support our budding sports stars at the grassroots," CM Sarma said in his post.

Officials said the Lakhimpur sports complex has been designed to meet modern standards and will provide young athletes access to quality training facilities closer to home. The project is part of the state government's broader push to decentralise sports development and ensure that talent from remote and rural regions is not left behind due to lack of infrastructure.

Over the past few years, Assam has made significant investments in the sports sector, with the government focussing on building stadiums, indoor halls, training centres and hostels across districts.

The aim is to create an ecosystem that allows aspiring athletes to train professionally without migrating to major cities.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly underlined that sports can be a powerful tool for youth empowerment, discipline and career development.

The district-level infrastructure drive is expected to widen the talent pool and strengthen Assam's representation in national and international sporting events.

Sports department officials said such facilities would also help identify and groom talent at an early stage through structured coaching and district-level competitions.

With the upcoming inauguration of the Lakhimpur sports complex, the state government hopes to send a strong message that world-class opportunities need not be limited to urban centres, and that every district can become a hub for sporting excellence in the years ahead.

As someone from a small town in Assam, I can't tell you how much this means. We have so many kids playing in fields with makeshift equipment. A proper complex can change lives. My only request: please make sure it's maintained well and remains accessible to all, not just for show.

Good step, but execution is key. We've seen many such announcements before. Will the equipment be modern? Will there be regular coaches? Or will it become another white elephant? The government must involve local sports associations in management for sustainability.

Investing in grassroots sports is investing in the nation's future. This decentralised model is smart. It reminds me of similar programs in Australia. Sports build character, teamwork, and discipline. Hope other states take note!

Bahut badhiya! Assam has produced champions like Hima Das. Imagine how many more we can find if we tap talent from every district. This is real development. Hope they also focus on sports like archery and boxing where the North-East has natural talent.

I appreciate the focus on remote regions. But what about the operational cost? Who will pay for the electricity, water, and staff salaries? The plan sounds great on paper, but a clear funding model for upkeep is essential. Otherwise, it will be inaugurated with fanfare and forgotten in a year.
