Assam to invest Rs 400 crore to make Muga silk a global brand: CM Himanta Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that a comprehensive Rs 400 crore initiative, Mission Senehjori, aimed at strengthening the state's sericulture sector, will be taken up with a special focus on promoting the world-renowned Muga silk and enhancing the livelihoods of those associated with the industry.
Speaking to reporters here after the presentation of the Assam Budget 2026-27, Sarma said the mission would be implemented over the next three years to transform Assam into the global hub of Golden Muga Silk.
"A comprehensive Rs 400 crore plan to strengthen our sericulture sector, especially Muga Silk through Mission Senehjori, will be taken up to boost its global value and support weavers," the Chief Minister said.
According to the Budget proposals, Mission Senehjori will seek to modernise and expand the Muga silk value chain by supporting rearers, reelers, weavers and entrepreneurs engaged in the sector. The state government estimated that nearly 2.6 lakh beneficiaries, including silk rearers, reelers, weavers and entrepreneurs, will receive assistance under the mission.
As part of the initiative, the government will strengthen 1,180 Farmer Interest Groups (FIGs) and establish or reinforce 30 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) by 2028 to improve production, marketing and value addition across the Muga silk ecosystem.
The Budget also proposes the development of a Muga Silk Tourism Park at Dhakuakhana, showcasing Assam's unique silk heritage while promoting tourism linked to the traditional industry.
In another major infrastructure initiative for the sector, a Muga Spun Mill will be established at Dhemaji, aimed at improving processing capacity and generating additional employment opportunities.
Muga silk, produced exclusively in Assam, is globally recognised for its natural golden sheen and durability.
The state government believes that increased investment, improved infrastructure and stronger producer organisations will enhance the competitiveness of Assam's silk industry in domestic as well as international markets.
Mission Senehjori is among the key sector-specific initiatives announced in the Assam Budget 2026-27 to promote traditional industries while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities in rural areas.

Finally, some real focus on our traditional industries! Muga silk is not just a fabric, it's a symbol of Assamese pride. The Silk Tourism Park at Dhakuakhana sounds wonderful - will attract tourists and preserve our heritage. But we need to ensure the benefits reach the actual weavers and not just middlemen.

Great to see a dedicated budget for Muga silk! The 2.6 lakh beneficiaries target is ambitious but achievable if properly monitored. However, I hope the government also addresses the issue of fair wages for weavers and provides training in modern designs to compete with Chinese silk.
As someone who works in fashion, I can say Muga silk has massive global potential if marketed right. The natural golden colour is unmatched. This investment in infrastructure and FPOs could really elevate Assam's silk industry to compete with Bhutan or Thailand's silk products.
Muga silk is literally liquid gold from Assam! 😍 Really happy to see the government investing in our traditional crafts. The Muga Spun Mill at Dhemaji will create jobs for local youth. But I hope they also focus on sustainable sericulture practices - our forests and environment matter too.
