Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday reviewed the progress of major power sector projects involving Assam Power Distribution Company Limited, Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited, and Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited, officials said.

The review meeting focused on strengthening Assam's power infrastructure and ensuring an uninterrupted electricity supply to meet the state's rising energy demands.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister assessed the present peak power demand scenario and reviewed the existing supply arrangements across the state.

He directed officials of the three power utilities to expedite ongoing projects for thermal, solar, and hydroelectric power generation, as well as transmission and grid infrastructure development.

Officials present at the meeting briefed the Chief Minister on the status of various projects being implemented across Assam, including measures to improve generation capacity, modernise transmission systems, and reduce transmission and distribution losses.

According to officials, special emphasis was laid on enhancing power availability during peak consumption periods, particularly in rapidly growing urban centres and industrial zones.

The Chief Minister also stressed the need to complete projects on time to avoid delays in strengthening the state's energy network.

The review comes at a time when Assam has been witnessing a steady rise in electricity consumption driven by urbanisation, industrial expansion, and increasing domestic demand.

The government is also focusing on expanding renewable energy generation as part of its broader strategy to ensure a sustainable and reliable power supply.

Sources said the Chief Minister instructed the concerned departments to maintain close coordination for the faster execution of projects and the efficient utilisation of resources.

He also sought regular monitoring of ongoing works to ensure targets are met within the stipulated timelines.

The Assam government has, in recent years, undertaken several initiatives to improve electricity connectivity and infrastructure in both urban and rural areas.

Officials said the ongoing projects under Assam Power Distribution Company Limited, Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited, and Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited are expected to significantly enhance the state's generation, transmission, and distribution capacities in the coming years.

As someone who works in energy consulting, I appreciate seeing state governments prioritizing grid modernization. The push for reducing T&D losses is key—it's a major issue across India. Hopefully Assam can set a benchmark for other states.

Living in a remote village in Upper Assam, electricity supply is still erratic. Hope these projects actually reach rural areas and not just urban centres. We need consistent power for farming and household needs. 🤞

Renewable energy focus is smart—Assam has great hydroelectric potential. But execution has historically been slow. Let's see if this review leads to actual progress on the ground rather than just another meeting.

Improving power infrastructure is long overdue. As a small business owner in Tinsukia, frequent voltage fluctuations damage our equipment. Hope the CM's directives ensure stable supply and faster project completion. Also, solar subsidies for households would be great! 🌞
