Assam CM highlights emerging sectors, urges youth to prepare for future job market
Guwahati, June 18
Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Thursday urged students and young job-seekers to prepare for emerging employment opportunities, identifying semiconductors, Artificial Intelligence, green energy and advanced manufacturing as key sectors that are expected to drive the state's future job market.
In a post on social media platform X, Sarma addressed students whose Class 12 examination results have recently been declared and encouraged them to plan their careers in line with the changing economic landscape.
"Your Class 12 results are declared and you are planning your next career move? Here are key sectors which will shape the job market in Assam in the coming days. The opportunities will be limitless, make sure you are ready to grab it," the Chief Minister wrote.
Along with the post, Sarma shared an infographic titled 'Preparing Assam's Youth for What's Next', outlining the sectors that the state government believes will generate significant employment opportunities in the coming years.
According to the infographic, the semiconductor sector is expected to create new opportunities in chip manufacturing and related industries, marking a first for the region.
Assam has emerged as a major destination for semiconductor investments following the establishment of the Tata Electronics semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad in Morigaon district.
The Chief Minister also highlighted AI as a rapidly expanding field that would open up technology and data-driven career opportunities for young professionals.
Green energy, including solar, hydro and clean power projects, was identified as another sector with strong employment potential.
Advanced manufacturing, which encompasses skilled factory operations and modern production roles, was also listed among the sectors likely to drive future job creation.
The post comes as the Assam government continues to focus on industrialisation, skill development and investment promotion to create employment opportunities for the state's growing youth population.
Officials have repeatedly emphasised that ongoing investments in technology, manufacturing and infrastructure projects are expected to transform Assam into a major employment hub in the Northeast.

Good initiative, but we've heard similar promises before. Infographics on X won't help if ground-level infrastructure remains weak. What about the youth in Tinsukia or Barpeta? They need actual computer labs and internet access first. Semiconductors won't reach them.
As someone who studied engineering and left Assam for Bangalore, this gives me hope. If green energy and advanced manufacturing actually take off, maybe I can finally move back. The Tata semiconductor plant at Jagiroad is already a game-changer. Let's hope skill development follows.
All this sounds great but we need more than just announcements. What's the timeline? What about the traditional sectors like tea and tourism that still employ lakhs of Assamese? Don't ignore them while chasing new-age buzzwords. Balance is key.
As a techie originally from the US now working in Guwahati, I'm thrilled to see Assam targeting AI and semiconductors. The global talent pool is shifting, and this state has smart young people. Just ensure the education system starts teaching coding and data science from Class 9 onwards. 🚀
My cousins in Jorhat are excited but also confused. The schools barely teach basic computer skills, and now we're talking semiconductors? Good vision, but the ground reality needs urgent fixing. Invest in teachers, labs, and vocational training first. Baby steps before giant leaps please. 😊
