Assam Assembly issues directive to curb electricity wastage

The Assam Legislative Assembly has issued a directive to curb electricity wastage within its premises by asking staff to ensure that lights, fans, and air conditioners are switched off whenever rooms and passages remain unoccupied, officials said on Thursday.
According to an official order issued by the Assembly Secretariat, there is "considerable wastage of electricity" in the Assembly complex, with electrical appliances frequently found running even when no one is present in offices, rooms, and corridors.
The communication, signed by the Secretary of the Assam Legislative Assembly, has been addressed to the Additional Secretary and In‑charge of the Nazarat Branch, seeking immediate corrective measures.
The memorandum noted that fans, lights, and air conditioners are often left switched on in unoccupied rooms and passages, resulting in unnecessary power consumption.
It stated that such avoidable use of electricity not only leads to additional expenditure from the public exchequer but also runs contrary to the principles of energy conservation.
Seeking strict compliance, the Assembly Secretariat requested the Nazarat Branch to issue suitable instructions to all concerned staff to ensure that all electrical appliances are switched off whenever rooms or passages are vacant.
"It is therefore requested to kindly take proper note of the matter and issue suitable instructions/directions to all concerned staff for strict compliance so that all electrical appliances are switched off when the rooms or passages are unoccupied," the memorandum said.
A copy of the communication has also been forwarded to the Private Secretary to the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly for information.
The move comes amid growing emphasis by governments and public institutions across the country on energy efficiency and reducing avoidable expenditure through better management of electricity consumption in government offices.
Officials said the directive aims to promote responsible energy use within the Assembly premises and encourage staff members to adopt simple conservation practices that can collectively reduce electricity bills and contribute to environmental sustainability.
The Assembly administration is expected to monitor compliance with the directive to minimise unnecessary power consumption in the legislature complex.
