"Governor shared his concern over the growing prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, stress-related disorders, and cardiovascular ailments - Lok Bhavan official"

Itanagar, May 9

Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lieutenant General K.T. Parnaik on Saturday expressed concern over the growing prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases, saying the health issue is increasingly affecting people of all age groups across the state, officials said.

A Lok Bhavan official said that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati President, Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay, held meeting with the Governor at the Lok Bhavan in Itanagar.

They discussed the evolving healthcare scenario in the North Eastern Region, with particular focus on the unique healthcare challenges and opportunities in Arunachal Pradesh, the official added.

The Governor shared his concern over the growing prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, stress-related disorders, and cardiovascular ailments, which are increasingly affecting people across all age groups.

Stressing the importance of preventive healthcare, Lieutenant General Parnaik (retired) requested AIIMS Guwahati to undertake dedicated studies and research initiatives to identify region-specific causes and recommend practical remedies suited to the socio-cultural and geographical conditions of the Northeast.

Highlighting the need for a holistic healthcare approach, the Governor emphasised the importance of introducing the latest technologies and advanced medical research into the state's healthcare ecosystem.

He urged AIIMS Guwahati to share modern healthcare innovations, research findings, and best medical practices with the health officials and medical institutions of Arunachal Pradesh to strengthen healthcare delivery, improve diagnostic capabilities, and enhance patient care across the state.

Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon and Padma Shri awardee, assured the Governor Parnaik of AIIMS Guwahati's fullest cooperation and support to strengthen healthcare collaboration with Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences.

He also presented his book titled 'Bharat Mein Sadak Durghatnayen', published by the National Book Trust, to the Governor.

The AIIMS Guwahati was established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY) in May 2017.

As a teacher in Itanagar, I see this problem in our students themselves. Many children as young as 10-12 are showing signs of obesity and stress. Parents are working long hours, kids are glued to phones, and physical activity has reduced drastically. The Governor's call for holistic healthcare is important—it should include mental health awareness too. AIIMS Guwahati can definitely help, but real change has to start at home and in schools. Let's bring back traditional games and community sports! 👫

While I appreciate the Governor raising this issue, let's not forget that many of these lifestyle diseases are also linked to poverty and lack of access to nutritious food in rural areas. You can't tell a farmer in a remote village to 'eat healthy' when they can't afford vegetables or fruits. Also, the private healthcare costs in Arunachal are sky-high—many people delay treatment because of expenses. I hope this collaboration with AIIMS Guwahati leads to actual subsidized treatment and not just research papers. Action, not just talks!

Good to see Northeast India getting medical attention. I work with a non-profit in the region and can confirm—diabetes and hypertension are silently spreading even in tribal communities. The shift from organic local food to processed items is alarming. The Governor's focus on preventive care is spot on. Hope AIIMS Guwahati sends mobile health units to remote areas. Also, the book on road accidents is relevant—poor roads in the hills are literally killing people before lifestyle diseases can. 🚑
