Arsenal sign Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle on long-term deal
London, Aug 8
North London club Arsenal have signed Brazil international Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United on a long-term contract, the Premier League club announced on Saturday.
The 28-year-old midfielder joins Arsenal after spending four-and-a-half seasons at Newcastle, where he made nearly 200 appearances and established himself as one of the influential midfielders in the Premier League.
Guimaraes began his professional career with Sao Paulo-based Audax in 2015 before moving to Athletico Paranaense two years later. He helped the Brazilian club win four major trophies before earning a move to French side Lyon in January 2020.
After two seasons in Ligue 1, Guimaraes joined Newcastle in January 2022 and quickly became an important figure in the club's midfield. He played a key role in Newcastle's Carabao Cup triumph in 2025 and helped the club secure UEFA Champions League qualification across two seasons.
At international level, Guimaraes has earned 48 caps for Brazil. He was part of the country's squad at the FIFA World Cup and has also represented Brazil at the Copa America. He won a gold medal with Brazil at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Arsenal Sporting Director Andrea Berta welcomed the midfielder and said Guimaraes would add leadership and quality to the squad.
"Bruno is a player with a great mentality and great quality, who will bring strong leadership to our squad," Berta said.
"With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team. As we have all seen, Bruno can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player. He combines quality with quantity, and has provided goals and assists for his team every year."
Berta added that Guimaraes' versatility would give Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta greater options in developing the team's style of play.
"Bruno will allow Mikel to further develop our playing style and will also increase our internal competitiveness, which is essential for maintaining the standards required when we are aiming to win major trophies," he said.
Guimaraes will wear the No. 39 shirt at Arsenal and will join his new teammates immediately.

Newcastle fans must be gutted, but that's football. Guimaraes is a world-class midfielder and Arsenal's midfield now looks scary good. Great business before the season starts!
£100m+ for a 28-year-old is a gamble, but top clubs need immediate impact. His leadership and experience in the Prem makes this a safer bet than some younger signings.
As an Arsenal fan, I'm thrilled! Guimaraes is exactly what we need—a player who can control games and isn't afraid of a tackle. Arteta's system will suit him perfectly. COYG! 💪
Interesting move, but let's be a bit cautious. He had injury issues last season. If Arsenal can keep him fit, he'll be a gem. If not, that's a lot of money sitting on the bench. Just saying.
Bruno is genuinely underrated. His passing range and ability to break lines is elite. Arsenal have quietly built one of the best midfields in Europe.
