Anil Sharma revisits special memories of 'Gadar 2' release as Sunny Deol-starrer clocks 3 years

Mumbai, Aug 11

Filmmaker Anil Sharma took to social media to celebrate three years of his film 'Gadar 2'. On the occasion, he looked back at the film's release and recalled the overwhelming response and emotional moments shared by the team.

The Sunny Deol-starrer hit theatres on August 11, 2023 and went on to become one of the biggest successes of the year. Marking the film's third anniversary, Anil shared a poster highlighting the film's advance bookings. He recalled how 20 lakh tickets had already been booked ahead of its theatrical release.

"Abhi kal hi toh baat hai release hui thi #gadar2 .. 3 saal ho gaye .. 10 Aug ko poster dala tha ki 20 lakh tickts advance mein book ho gaye the .. aur 11th Aug subh .. is woqt .. hum sab ki ankho mein khushi ke aansoon the .. what a day it was god is very very kind," wrote Anil Sharma.

'Gadar 2' marked the return of Sunny Deol as Tara Singh, alongside Ameesha Patel as Sakeena. Set against the backdrop of India-Pakistan tensions, the film continued the story of Tara Singh and his family, picking up several years after the events of the 2001 blockbuster 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.' Directed by Anil Sharma and written by Shaktimaan Talwar, the film also starred Utkarsh Sharma, Simrat Kaur, Manisha Wadhwa, and Gaurav Chopra.

Set against the backdrop of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the film followed Tara Singh as he travelled to Pakistan to rescue his imprisoned son, Jeete.

Filmmaker Anil Sharma has revealed that 'Gadar 3' is currently in development, with work underway on the script. The update comes as the Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel-starrer franchise completed 25 years since the release of the original 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.'

At an event, Sharma revealed to the media that the script is currently being worked on and, if everything stays on track, the film could go on floors next year. However, he added that the project will only move ahead if the story and scale match his vision for the franchise.

Honestly, the movie worked because of the nostalgia. The 1971 war backdrop and Sunny Deol's raw energy connected with the masses. But let's be real - the story was predictable. Still, happy to see Indian cinema celebrating such larger-than-life films. Gadar 3 needs a fresh take though!

20 lakh tickets booked in advance, aur maine bhi advance mein hi booking kiya tha! Section 144 laga di thi kyunki bheed itni thi. Sunny paaji ka jadoo abhi bhi kamaal hai. Waiting for Gadar 3, bas script solid honi chahiye 🤞

The movie was a family entertainer, no doubt. But as a student of history, I wish they'd shown the 1971 war more accurately. Still, it's a film for entertainment, not a documentary. Glad the team remembers these moments fondly. Gadar 3 should focus on emotions, not just action.

I'm from Goa and saw this film in a single-screen theatre with the local crowd. The energy was unmatched! Anil Sharma genuinely respects his audience. Gadar 3 needs to bring back that same level of patriotism without getting too preachy. Hope the script does justice.

"Abhi kal hi toh baat hai" - exactly how I feel! Three years passed in a blink. The emotional reunion scenes, the patriotic dialogues, everything was perfect. But I hope Gadar 3 doesn't just rely on hero worship. Story and scale ke saath saath, logic bhi ho toh achha rahega 🙏
