Andhra Pradesh Unveils 5 E-Mobility Cities for Green Transport Future

The Andhra Pradesh government has notified five model E-Mobility cities across the state to promote sustainable urban mobility. These cities include Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Nellore, and Tirupati, representing each administrative region. The initiative is backed by a Rs 250 crore Corpus Fund under the AP Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy 4.0, with each city receiving Rs 50 crore. The policy aims to achieve carbon neutrality in the transport sector by 2047 through EV infrastructure, green corridors, and zero-emission zones.

Andhra Pradesh govt notifies five E-Mobility cities

Andhra Pradesh notifies five model E-Mobility cities under its Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy 4.0, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2047.

"The initiative is aimed at transforming Andhra Pradesh into one of India's leading hubs for electric mobility adoption - official release"

Amaravati, May 1

The government of Andhra Pradesh on Friday notified five model E-Mobility cities across the state, marking a major step towards building a sustainable, technology-driven, and future-ready urban mobility ecosystem.

Five model E-Mobility cities represent the five administrative regions of the state. These cities are Visakhapatnam in North Andhra, Rajahmundry in Godavari region, Vijayawada in Central Andhra, Nellore in South Andhra and Tirupati in Rayalaseema.

The government issued orders operationalising the Andhra Pradesh Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy (4.0) 2024-29.

The Municipal Administration & Urban Development Department approved the Operational Framework and Strategic Roadmap for implementation of the policy in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

The initiative is aimed at transforming Andhra Pradesh into one of India's leading hubs for electric mobility adoption, EV infrastructure development, green urban transport systems, and sustainable urban planning, while aligning with the State's long-term vision of achieving carbon neutrality in the transport sector by 2047, said an official release.

Operational framework envisages development of high-density EV charging infrastructure, green routes, green channels, battery swapping stations, zero emission zones, and integrated electric mobility ecosystems in the identified cities.

The framework also proposes a strategic charging infrastructure network with one EV charging station per 3x3 km grid within E-Mobility cities and one EV charging station every 30 km along inter-city Green Channels/highways

The government has also proposed utilisation of a dedicated Rs 250 crore Corpus Fund under the AP Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy (4.0), with Rs 50 crore earmarked for each Model E-Mobility City to support infrastructure deployment, grid strengthening, fleet electrification, innovation pilots, viability gap funding, and consumer adoption initiatives.

The framework provides for a phased and integrated implementation approach covering EV charging stations, battery swapping infrastructure, green freight corridors, electric public transport systems, renewable energy integration, smart urban mobility planning, Zero Emission Zones (ZEZs) and Dedicated City E-Mobility Cells (CEMCs).

As part of the implementation strategy, city-specific interventions have also been proposed. Green tourism mobility, electric BRTS corridors, and green freight corridors have been proposed for Visakhapatnam. Model Green Routes along BRTS corridors and logistics-focused EV infrastructure are proposed for Vijayawada.

Electrification of river transport systems and green goods corridors are proposed for Rajahmundry. EV logistics systems for fisheries and coastal transport infrastructure are mooted for Nellore and Full electrification of Tirumala shuttle systems and Zero Emission pilgrim mobility zones for Tirupati.

Finally some practical action! Tirupati with zero emission pilgrim zones is brilliant - the Tirumala ghat roads see so much pollution from buses. But what about Tier-3 towns? They should also get charging infrastructure, otherwise EV adoption will remain only in big cities. Also need affordable EV options for common man.

Good policy but implementation is key. The 3x3 km grid for charging stations is ambitious - even Delhi struggles with that. Also, battery swapping is still unproven at scale. And what about the electricity source? If we're still burning coal, then EVs just shift pollution elsewhere. AP needs solar integration alongside this.

As someone from Rajahmundry, excited about river transport electrification! The Godavari ferries are so polluting. But need to ensure affordable fares - don't want another 'premium' service that common people can't use. Also, what about the thousands of auto-rickshaw drivers? They need subsidies to switch to electric.

Impressive vision from AP! The 2047 carbon neutrality target is ambitious but India needs this kind of state-level leadership. The Rs 250 crore corpus fund is a good start too. Would love to see how they handle grid stability though - a sudden surge in EV charging could overload the system without proper smart grid integration.

Good initiative but hope it's not just a photo-op announcement. The policy 4.0 sounds like previous versions weren't implemented properly. Also, Nellore's fishing logistics focus is smart - the coastline needs clean transport. But need to train local mechanics for EV repairs
