Amul hikes milk prices by Rs 2 per litre across variants from May 14

Amul increases fresh pouch milk prices by Rs 2 per litre from May 14, citing higher costs of cattle feed, packaging, and fuel. The hike supports milk producers.

"Amul as a policy passes on almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to the milk producers. - GCMMF"

New Delhi, May 13

Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, which markets milk and dairy products under the Amul brand, has increased the price of fresh pouch milk by Rs 2 per litre across major variants and packs across India, effective from May 14.

The federation said the revised rates will apply to all variants of Amul milk from Thursday.

In a press release, GCMMF said the Rs 2 per litre increase translates to around 2.5 to 3.5 per cent and noted that no increase in consumer milk prices had been made since May 2025.

The GCMMF said the revision was taken due to an increase in the overall cost of milk production and operations.

"This price hike is being done due to increase in overall cost of operation and production of milk. There is a substantial increase in cost of cattle feed, milk packaging film and fuel during the year," the GCMMF said.

It added that member unions had also raised the procurement price paid to farmers by Rs 30 per kg of fat, which it said was a 3.7 per cent increase compared to May 2025.

GCMMF said the price revision would support milk producers and encourage higher production.

"Amul as a policy passes on almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to the milk producers. The price revision shall help in sustaining remunerative milk prices to our milk producers and to encourage them for higher milk production," the federation said.

Have been using Amul since childhood, and I appreciate that they pass on 80 paise of every rupee to the farmers. But why not give an option for smaller packs for low-income families? Rs 2 extra per litre might not sound much, but for daily wage earners, every rupee counts. 😔

The cost of cattle feed has gone up because of inflation in grains and fuel. This is not just Amul's fault—it's the entire supply chain being squeezed. At least Amul is transparent about the reasons, which is more than what Nestle or Mother Dairy does when they hike. We'll grumble but still buy it because quality wise, Amul is still better than many alternatives.

Good that they are paying farmers more—Rs 30 per kg fat increase is significant. But I wish they had introduced a low-fat or budget variant that stays affordable for the poor. Middle class can absorb Rs 2, but the lower income groups will feel the pinch. Still, better than no increase for farmers—kisan ki aamdani badhni chahiye. 🌾

First fuel, then vegetables, now milk—everything is going up. But at least Amul is giving a logical breakdown: cattle feed, packaging, fuel. Compare that to other brands that just say 'due to market conditions' and hike by Rs 5 overnight. Amul still remains the most trusted brand for us. 2.5-3.5% hike after one year without increase is not too bad actually.
