Zelenskyy Warns US-Iran War Risks Ukraine's Vital Missile Defences

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that escalating conflict between the US and Iran could jeopardise Ukraine's access to vital American anti-missile defence systems. He explained that Ukraine secures weapons like Patriot missiles through a NATO funding programme, but supplies are already limited due to US production constraints. Zelenskyy fears a protracted Middle East war would divert resources and increase risks for Ukraine's air defence capabilities. Concurrently, Ukraine is sharing its hard-earned drone warfare expertise with Middle Eastern nations like Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

"All these packages are at risk": Zelenskyy warns US-Iran war could jeopardise Ukraine's missile defences
"And of course, (given) the big challenge in the Middle East war and Iran, all these packages are at risk. - Volodymyr Zelenskyy"

Kyiv, April 23

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that a prolonged conflict in Iran could jeopardise Ukraine's ability to secure vital anti-missile defence systems from the United States.

In an interview with CNN, Zelenskyy explained that while Kyiv has received a limited supply of such weaponry due to constraints in US production, there has been no immediate disruption to current supplies or the provision of intelligence.

The Ukrainian leader noted that his country has been securing American hardware through the PURL programme, which allows NATO members to fund weapon purchases for Kyiv.

"Through this programme, we can include and buy anti-ballistic missiles for Patriot systems and some other weapons, which is very important for us. We don't have this...with our European neighbours," Zelenskyy told CNN.

However, he expressed concern that escalating instability in the Middle East could divert resources away from Ukraine's defence needs. "And of course, (given) the big challenge in the Middle East war and Iran, all these packages are at risk," he said.

Zelenskyy pointed out that the United States has supplied "only a small number" of these systems so far. He attributed the limited volume to manufacturing capacity, stating, "We had not too much. We understand why, because the production in the United States is not so big."

The President warned that a protracted conflict or a delay in reaching a ceasefire in the Middle East would have negative consequences for Ukraine's security. "And if the war will continue or a ceasefire is delayed...(this) will not be good. And maybe we will have more risks with anti-ballistics," he added.

Amid these challenges, Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine is sharing its strategic expertise with Middle Eastern nations regarding drone warfare. After four years of countering Russian-deployed drones, many of which are of Iranian design, Kyiv is offering its technical know-how to regional partners.

According to the President, agreements have already been formalised with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

"We will continue to work with other countries," Zelenskyy stated, adding, "We will be ready to deliver first our expertise...and the second point is training missions."

Zelenskyy is right to be worried. The US defence industry can only stretch so far. It reminds me of the global supply chain issues we saw during the pandemic. One major conflict disrupts everything else. Hope cooler heads prevail in the Middle East, for everyone's sake. 🙏

Interesting that Ukraine is now sharing drone expertise with Gulf nations. Turned a vulnerability into a strength. Shows how modern warfare is changing. From an Indian strategic perspective, the diversification of defence partnerships and knowledge exchange is a key takeaway here.

While I sympathize with Ukraine's plight, this highlights a deeper issue of over-reliance on a single supplier for critical defence. It's a lesson for all nations, including India, to build robust indigenous manufacturing capabilities. Atmanirbharta in defence is not just a slogan, it's a necessity.

The geopolitical domino effect is clear. A flare-up in West Asia impacts Eastern Europe. It's all connected. India has to navigate these turbulent waters very carefully, maintaining relationships with all sides while protecting its own interests. A tough balancing act.

Respectfully, President Zelenskyy's warning, while valid, also feels like a public plea to keep the spotlight on Ukraine. The world has many crises. It's a bit unfair to frame it as the Middle East conflict 'taking away' from Ukraine. Both deserve attention and peaceful resolutions.
