Air connectivity with EU strengthened: Civil Aviation Minister Naidu

Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu meets EU Transport Commissioner to advance Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), safety, and innovation cooperation.

"strengthened India and the European Union relations with a focus on... green aviation initiatives - Official Release"

Davos, January 23

Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, met with the European Union Transport Commissioner, Apostolos Tzitzikostas. Both held in-depth discussions on sustainability, innovation, and environmentally friendly transportation systems.

The meeting took place on Thursday at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos. The meeting strengthened India and the European Union relations with a focus on participating in the green aviation initiatives.

Innovation and sustainability were the meeting's focus areas. The meeting emphasised innovations such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), prioritising environmentally friendly transportation and green aviation. They decided to further strengthen European Union-India relations and increase participation in global green aviation initiatives.

The Minister clarified that further steps are being taken to improve safety standards. They agreed to strengthen cooperation between EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) and DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) in areas such as coordination, joint certification, cybersecurity, and drone regulations.

An action plan was formulated to deliver results across airport infrastructure, digital transformation, and sustainable development, the release said.

These discussions will contribute to job creation and attracting investments in India's aviation sector. New initiatives will be launched, including the signing of an MoU between EASA and DGCA, the establishment of joint working groups, and the implementation of technology transfer programs. These will be coordinated with Indian government schemes such as UDAN, taking the aviation sector to a global level, it added.

This meeting will be a strong step towards promoting environmental sustainability, improving safety, and encouraging innovation in India's aviation sector, the release stated.

Good step forward. But I really hope the focus on 'digital transformation' and 'technology transfer' actually benefits our domestic aviation manufacturing. We need to build capacity here, not just be a market for foreign tech. The MoU must have clear clauses for skill development in India.

More connectivity is always welcome! Maybe now we can get easier and cheaper flights from tier-2 cities to Europe under the UDAN scheme? That would be a real game-changer for tourism and business. The job creation part sounds promising too.

As a frequent flyer between Delhi and Frankfurt, I appreciate the focus on safety standards and coordination. Harmonizing drone regulations is also crucial. Hope the 'action plan' has strict timelines. We've seen many MoUs signed; implementation is key.

Green aviation initiatives are important, but let's be practical. Will the push for SAF make tickets more expensive for the common man? Sustainability is good, but it shouldn't price out middle-class families from air travel. Balance is needed.

This is a positive development. Collaboration on cybersecurity is very timely. Our aviation sector is growing fast and needs world-class protection for its digital infrastructure. Hoping for more such partnerships that bring in best practices.
