Raghav Chadha Demands Udaan Yatri Cafes at All Airports for Affordable Food

AAP MP Raghav Chadha has urged the government to expand the Udaan Yatri Cafe initiative to all airports across India. He highlighted that currently only 10-12 of over 150 airports have these low-cost food outlets. Chadha also recommended relocating the cafes inside the departure areas, post-security, where passengers spend the most time. He emphasized that access to reasonably priced food should be a basic facility for all air travellers.

"Affordable food at airports should not be a luxury": Raghav Chadha urges expansion of Udaan Yatri Cafes at all airports

AAP MP Raghav Chadha calls for Udaan Yatri Cafes at all Indian airports and relocation inside departure areas to provide affordable food to air travellers.

"Affordable food at airports should not be a luxury. It is a basic convenience for travellers. - Raghav Chadha"

New Delhi, March 10

Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha urged the government to expand the Udaan Yatri Cafe initiative to all airports across the country and relocate the outlets inside the departure areas to make affordable food accessible to air travellers.

In a post on X, Chadha said he raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha and welcomed the government's move to introduce Udaan Yatri Cafes aimed at providing low-cost food and beverages at airports.

"Today, I made another intervention in Parliament about Udaan Yatri Cafes at airports. Air travellers have long complained about the high cost of food at airports," Chadha said.

He appreciated the government's initiative but suggested two key improvements to make the scheme more effective. According to Chadha, the number of airports offering the facility remains limited despite India having over 150 operational airports.

"At present, India has around 150+ airports but only about 10 to 12 airports have Udaan Yatri Cafes. These cafes should be expanded to all airports across the country so that affordable food is available to every traveller," he said.

The AAP MP also pointed out that the cafes are currently located in pre-check-in areas, which limits their accessibility to passengers who spend most of their waiting time after completing security checks.

"The Udaan Yatri Cafes should ideally be located inside the departure area, after check-in and security, where passengers spend the longest time waiting to board their flight and are most likely to buy tea or snacks," he said.

The AAP MP emphasised that access to reasonably priced food at airports should be treated as a basic facility rather than a premium service.

"Affordable food at airports should not be a luxury. It is a basic convenience for travellers," Chadha added.

Meanwhile, Parliament also witnessed discussions on the evolving situation in West Asia. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed both Houses of Parliament on the conflict in the region, stating that India supports dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions.

Jaishankar said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring the developments, while relevant ministries are coordinating to ensure the safety of Indian citizens and safeguard the country's energy and trade interests in the region.

Good point by Raghav Chadha. But I hope the quality and hygiene are maintained. Sometimes 'affordable' government schemes mean poor quality food. It shouldn't be a choice between expensive or substandard.

This is a welcome step. Air travel is becoming more common for the middle class. We shouldn't be forced to pay a small fortune for a cup of tea or a samosa just because we're inside an airport. Hope the government acts on this quickly.

As a frequent traveler to India for work, I completely agree. The price difference between city restaurants and airport outlets is staggering. This initiative would be a huge relief for everyone, especially families traveling with children.

The location point is key! What's the use of a cheap cafe if it's before security? Most of us reach early, clear check-in and security, and then have 1-2 hours to kill inside. That's when we need affordable options. Smart suggestion.

While this is a good consumer issue, I wish our MPs showed the same urgency on matters like women's safety and inflation. Still, a practical problem being highlighted. Hope it gets done.
