Actor Raghava Lawrence signals political entry in TN, says he has taken 'positive decision' after public backing

Chennai, June 14

Actor, choreographer and filmmaker Raghava Lawrence has strongly hinted at entering active politics in Tamil Nadu, stating that he has taken a "positive decision" after receiving overwhelming encouragement from the public and his fans.

Lawrence's remarks come amid growing speculation over his political future and reports that he could be considered as a candidate for the forthcoming Tiruchy East Assembly by-election.

The bypoll was necessitated after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay vacated the constituency, having won both Perambur and Tiruchy East seats in the Assembly election and subsequently choosing to retain Perambur.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Lawrence said he had recently sought public opinion on whether he should step into politics by releasing a video detailing the social service activities he has carried out over the years.

According to the actor, the response from the public exceeded his expectations and played a key role in shaping his decision. "I uploaded a video highlighting the welfare initiatives and social service work that I have been involved in for many years. I asked people whether I should enter politics or continue serving society in my present capacity. The response was overwhelming," he said.

Lawrence noted that a large number of people urged him to take the political route and assured him of their support. "Many people encouraged me to join politics. I am happy that people have invited me to take that step. I have made a positive decision," he said, without elaborating on the timing of his formal entry or the political platform he may choose.

The actor, however, stopped short of making any official announcement regarding his political affiliation or electoral plans. His comments have nevertheless fuelled speculation that he could soon play a more direct role in Tamil Nadu politics.

Known for his philanthropic activities, Lawrence has built a significant public profile beyond cinema through initiatives related to education, healthcare and support for underprivileged communities.

Political observers believe that his social outreach and popularity among youth could make him a formidable entrant in the state's evolving political landscape. With the Tiruchy East by-election expected to draw considerable attention, Lawrence's latest remarks are likely to intensify discussions over his possible candidature and future political role.

Finally, someone who understands the importance of public opinion! Lawrence asking people for their input shows humility. I hope he focuses on education and healthcare, which he has worked on before. Tamil Nadu needs more leaders who think of the common man.

Another actor turning politician? The track record hasn't been great. Just because you distribute freebies doesn't mean you can govern. Lawrence should prove himself with concrete policies and not just rely on his fandom. Actions speak louder than interviews! 😤

I'm cautiously optimistic. Lawrence's work with underprivileged kids and in healthcare is genuine. But politics in TN is a different beast—alliances, caste equations, and corruption. He'll need more than YouTube videos to survive here. Let's hope he brings real change.

Trust me, this is just a PR move before the Tiruchy East by-election. All these celebs come with big promises and disappear after winning. Lawrence should first contest as an independent and win on his merit, not ride on Vijay's coattails. Show us you're different! 💪

I appreciate that he sought public opinion before jumping in. That's more than most politicians do. But we've seen this movie before—stars come, fans celebrate, and nothing changes. Lawrence, if you're reading this, please don't become another empty suit. Serve with integrity.
