India's 10 Semiconductor Units to Make Global Mark: PM Modi Announces Complete Supply Chain

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that a comprehensive semiconductor supply chain is being created in India, with 10 major domestic units poised to make a global impact. He emphasized that heavy capital investments in core manufacturing and engineering sectors are generating millions of job opportunities for the youth. The government is also investing approximately Rs 75,000 crore in shipbuilding and developing a complete MRO ecosystem for the aviation sector. Over 51,000 youth received appointment letters for government jobs under the Rozgar Mela initiative.

"10 major Indian semiconductor units to make global mark soon": PM Modi says 'complete supply chain' being created

New Delhi, May 23

Asserting that every citizen is working towards the resolution of building a developed nation by 2047, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced that a comprehensive semiconductor supply chain is taking root in India, with 10 major domestic units poised to make a global impact in the near future.

Addressing a Rozgar Mela via video conferencing, the Prime Minister emphasised that heavy capital investments in core manufacturing and engineering sectors are generating millions of high-quality job opportunities for the nation's youth, with a 'complete supply chain for semiconductors is being created in India'.

"Today, every Indian is moving forward with a big resolution, which is to build a developed India by 2047. To achieve this goal, the country is investing in various sectors, and this investment is creating millions of new employment opportunities for the youth of the country. Today, a complete supply chain for semiconductor manufacturing is being created in India. In the coming times, 10 major semiconductor units from India will be making their mark in the world," PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister further detailed the government's strategic focus on the maritime and aerospace sectors, highlighting major financial and structural initiatives to establish high-end engineering capabilities within the country.

"Today, India is developing an ecosystem from shipbuilding to refitting and overhauling. An investment of approximately Rs 75,000 crore is being made for this. Similarly, we are developing a complete MRO ecosystem, i.e., maintenance, overhaul, and repair facilities, in India itself. This will greatly help the country's aviation sector and will certainly open up a new sector of employment for India's youth," he added.

The push to establish an indigenous Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) network is set to significantly reduce costs for Indian commercial airlines, which have traditionally relied on overseas facilities for heavy aircraft maintenance.

Asserting that global partnerships are unlocking unprecedented pathways for the nation's workforce, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the world highly respects nations that innovate, build, and deliver at scale, adding that India is progressing rapidly in all three directions, driven by its youth power.

"With every new partnership, we are creating new avenues for Indian startups, researchers, and young professionals to connect with the world. This will also provide Indian youth with access to advanced expertise, global markets, and new growth opportunities. Today, the world respects countries that innovate, build, and deliver at scale. India is progressing rapidly in all three directions, and the biggest force behind this change is India's youth. Wherever I go in the world, I spend a lot of time discussing India's youth power", PM Modi said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday distributed more than 51,000 appointment letters to newly inducted recruits under the Rozgar Mela initiative.

Congratulating the youth, the Prime Minister stated that they are stepping into their roles at a crucial juncture and will serve as responsible partners in the nation's growth story.

"Today, more than 51,000 youth have received appointment letters for government jobs. Today, all of you are becoming important partners, responsible partners, in the country's development journey," PM Modi said while addressing the appointees.

Rozgar Melas primarily target youth aged 18 to 35, accommodating a range of academic qualifications, including those who have completed 8th, 10th, and 12th grades, as well as ITI, Diploma, and Graduate degrees. This also includes trained and certified candidates who meet the National Skills Qualifications Framework standards.

Job seekers are mobilised and informed about the Rozgar Mela through various channels, such as print advertisements, bulk SMS, social media, and workshops at colleges and universities in and around the event's district.

As someone working in the global semiconductor industry, this is impressive ambition. But high-end chipmaking requires immense water, power, and ultra-pure chemical supply chains. India has the talent but needs massive infrastructure upgrades. Good that the MRO ecosystem is also being developed - my airline friends have been complaining about sending planes to Singapore for repairs for years! ✈️

The Rozgar Mela distributing 51,000 appointment letters is good, but this is a drop in the ocean. My younger brother has been preparing for government exams for 3 years - the competition is insane. The real gamechanger will be how many private sector jobs these semiconductor and MRO units create. Hope the PM's vision translates to ground reality for our generation.

As a electronics engineering student, this gives me hope! 🙏 Finally we might have proper R&D and manufacturing jobs in India instead of just service-based IT roles. The MRO ecosystem for aviation is also much needed - Air India spends crores sending planes abroad for maintenance. But 2047 is too far - we need these semiconductor units operational by 2030 at least!

All this sounds great on paper, but what about the ground reality? The previous govts also made big promises about manufacturing. Where are the mobile phone factories we heard about? And 75,000 crore for shipbuilding - have we even sorted out the basic issues with shipyards like Cochin and HSL? Verify first, then celebrate I say.

Interesting perspective from outside. India's demographic dividend is real, and moving from service to high-end manufacturing is the logical next step. The
