Renowned litterateur Munshi Premchand will now again find a place in the Urdu textbook for class 11. The decision comes after furore over the exclusion of his chapter from the high school curriculum of Class 10 of the Uttar Pradesh Board.

The board has clarified that, until the previous year, private publishers were responsible for producing Hindi, Urdu, and Sanskrit textbooks aligned with the prescribed syllabus.

In a significant departure this year, the UP Board has engaged subject experts to develop the textbooks for Hindi, Urdu, and Sanskrit across classes 9 to 12. The present syllabus now features the poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz in Class 10, Premchand in Class 11 and Akbar Allahabadi in the textbooks for both Classes 11 and 12.

According to UP Board Secretary Divyakant Shukla, board officials feel that comparing UP Board textbooks with those from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for Hindi, Urdu and Sanskrit would not be equitable.
