It's oil firms decision to hike petrol price: FM
New Delhi/Trivandrum, May 24 : Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today shrugged off the government's responsibility over the hike in petrol prices, saying that petrol was a deregulated commodity. The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) reacted sharply to the hike, saying that they would stage protests until the hike was rolled back. Meanwhile, markets were closed in Thiruvananthapuram as the CPI-M led Left Democratic Front (LDF) called for a twelve hour strike to protest against the price hike. Petrol price hiked by Rs 7.50
New Delhi, May 23 : The government today announced a petrol price hike of Rs 7.50 per litre effective from midnight. Petroleum Minister S Jaipal Reddy had yesterday hinted at the possibility of a fuel price hike in the backdrop of the continuing free fall of the value of rupee against the US dollar. Petrol in Delhi currently costs Rs 65.64 a litre and after the increase it will be priced at Rs 73.14 per litre. In Kolkata the current cost is Rs.70.03 per litre and after the hike it would cost Rs.77.53. In Mumbai the price has been hiked from Rs 70.66 to Rs 78.16, and in Chennai, the price has been hiked from Rs 69.55 to Rs 77.05 per litre. Meanwhile, the BJP has slammed the Congress party for the fuel price hike.
