Kolkata streets to have intelligence cameras to curb violence
Kolkata, Nov 8 : To curb traffic violence and intensifying the security system of this densely populated metro, police have decided to install some 120 high-resolution 'intelligence cameras' in all important and vulnerable pockets of the city, a senior police official today said.
Additional Commissioner of Police (I) K Hari Rajan said the intelligence cameras, to be installed from next year, would not only help the traffic police to curb violence but the electronically fitted gadgets would also help the Lalbazar control room to ensure city's security system.
Talking to reporters, Mr Rajan said the city police have already installed twelve such spy cameras with monitoring system at Lalbazar.
Earlier, addressing participants of a car rally organised by SBI in association with Kolkata Police, Mr Rajan said the graph of road accidents in this metro was going down year-on-year from 462 in 2007 to 421 in the following year and 360 in the last ten months.
He said Kolkata has much lower number of traffic accidents as well as violence compared to other cities in the country.
Despite not much expansion of road network and ever increasing number of vehicles, the traffic system of this metro was best in the country, claimed Mr Rajan.
He said on an average three to four accidents are reported everyday in the city even though nearly 12 lakh vehicles plied on the city roads.
About 170 cars had particiapted in the 50-km rally that began at Khudiram Bose Indoor stadium to create awareness about safety of the drivers and the padestrians alike.
