Woman held for killing infant in Orissa
Bhubaneswar, Nov 8 : A woman has been arrested for killing a 24-day old baby in Orissa's Puri district, police said Sunday.
Mamata Samantray, 28, confessed that she killed the son of her sister-in-law Renubala as she wanted to make her own son the sole inheritor of the family property. She is a mother of a one-year-old boy.
Mamata is a resident of Kakharu Basta village, nearly 40 km from here.
"She was apprehensive about sharing the family properties after Renubala gave birth to the child," police inspector Jagannath Mishra told IANS.
She confessed to the crime after police recovered the body of the infant from a village pond Saturday. The infant was missing since Friday.
A police officer said Mamata came out of her house with the child Thursday evening when nobody was at home and threw the baby in the village pond.
